It's always been like that. I have never stepped into a Costco without having my membership checked.

To be fair, the vast majority of Costco's profit comes from the memberships. This kinda/sorta means that the goods they're selling are at a price where they won't make much if any money. I think the membership fees are pretty fair given the value that I get, even just going to Costco a few times a year. I try to avoid memberships inasmuch as possible, but every year I can easily count that the value I got from my Costco membership exceeded its cost.

Most of the stores in the area checks membership card upon entry, and saw a video that they're rolling out a scanner to validate membership at the entrance.

I used to use someone else card for years

They get the reward points from all our combined shopping /gas soooo it helped pay for the membership each year


Now Costco is enforcing at the register

Yeah, this has been in the news the past month or so. Instead of just flashing the card, looks like they'll require scanning. Based on how many people take 2 min just to take their card out to show them currently, I have to imagine the bottleneck that's going to create at the entrance.

I'm curious if that will change the ability to bypass that by telling them you're just using the pharamcy.

Also curious if they'll have non-member shopping with just gift cards scan their Cash Card upon entry.

I was just happy when my costco moved all the free samples into the outside aisle leaving the main aisle free of all the grazers. I don't know if it was just my costco, but people would just leave the carts all over and block everything to eat the crust of a pizza... mmmm but then again I did enjoy just ramming my cart into there. if you cant act better, so can't I.

I took a buddy with me so that I can scan his items. They didn't let him pay for it on his credit card. They said it has to be on member's credit card. I thought that was odd.

The official policy is that even though members can bring in guests, only members can make purchases. Our Costco put up a sign at the entrance stating that.
