Wow. Insane price for the 16-zone unit. I'm just a little concerned about testing that it actually works within the return window, given I have about 4 more months until I can turn my sprinklers back on.

Each zone will have 3-5 sprinkler head installed to it. So if you have 6 zones, you're better off with the 8-zone rachio.

Even if you install more zones in the future, unless you plan to expand coverage by more than 200 sq ft, you don't need the 16 zone.

I would recommend to looking at the details and look for ones that say that it comes in original packaging. More often than not it is new new, perhaps customer return without use or warehouse damaged.

Not sure if these qualify being that they are used, but water companies give rebates on both of these units. In my area they will give $80 rebate for either unit. More info can be found here: https://rachio.com/rebates/
If it does qualify, then the units could be basically free, except for taxes, of course.

Anyone have thoughts on the need for 8 vs 16 zone? My current. manual rainbird unit is 6 zone so is it safe to assume these rachio are one for one (meaning anything over 6 zone is sufficient)? Or is there are reason to get more zones, i.e., 16 one for future coverage?

Gen 1 is about 10+ years old, and has a very old/backward way of connecting the device to your WiFi that, when I tried setting it up for my in-laws, it didn't even work. Having had both Gen 1 and Gen 3, this is by far a better option and a great price.

Costco is a bit more and needs costco memebership but it is brand new ( so warranty is better ) and with Costco return policy. If I am in the market, it would buy from Costco. My 2 cents.
