Caution: for those who haven't had to shop for a refrigerator in a long while. French door models with ice dispensers on the door are notorious for mechanical problems. Ice compartments battle to maintain freezing temperatures in higher temperature refrigerated sections causing melted-ice puddles on the floor and failed ice dispensing units. This is true of all manufacturers. Many French door models offer internal water dispensers or "beverage centers" and an ice maker in the lower freezer section (where it makes sense). Cheers!

That's exactly what you are not supposed to do. If you dont use it, ice cubes fuse together to form a big chunk.

Good general tips and it doesn't make sweeping polarized blanket statements (like you see in this thread). He points out specific models and emphasizes ones made in the US that are reliable and easy to repair. Although he says some Samsung fridges are actually pretty solid he says hard pass on french door fridges with ice/water in the door.

Never ever EVER buy a Samsung fridge. They are horrible quality and when they break you will spend months trying to find someone that can work on them and knows what they are doing. Absolute garbage.

I snagged this fridge from Costco, and I like it, BUT there was a minor physical defect due to delivery and it took them MONTHS to get it resolved, probably the most frustrating repair experience I have had with a brand-new appliance.

I have the previous model of this for 7 years. The ice maker got changed out a couple of times under warranty. Temps are still fine. Bought an GE opal2 nugget maker for $300 over the holidays to hold the 6 of us over for awhile. . .and they love it.

The beverage drawer has been highly regarded and used here as well.

So the alternative would be the 4 door (drawer) with beverage center and internal nugget ice. Those are $900 more even on best sale.

As I go up in price etc. i.e. like the one above or the 4 door flex models. And then consider adding on the Family Hub models. . .I gave up on getting a deal from Sammy with EPP. Price is great. $830 for a 7 year warranty from Sammy scares me away. And the fact that they don't offer a 5 year warranty when they know everything breaks in the 4th year puts me off as well.
Buying a Samsung AND extended warranty sounds like multiple headaches waiting to happen!

I had this or a similar version and it died. Ice maker stopped working then it stopped cooling.
If I remember lots of posts about it.

Also the flex temp drawer is a total waste of space imo. Cuts way down the main refrigerator storage area.

SBS with water/ice dispenser are much more reliable than French door models though. Because the ice machine is actually in the freezer so there's no expectation for your fridge to break the laws of thermodynamics for it to work reliably.

Hasn't your mother asked you if everyone jumped off a cliff would you follow them?

Think about who this design is a win for? The manufacturer. They don't care about their reputation because it's such a popular design that people will buy it anyways. So they just have to make a fridge that will last through the warranty and then boom. Dead fridge and another sale. Who doesn't win? The you the consumer. And the environment. Think how much landfill waste is caused by junky appliances? Where's the all the outrage about that? No, we'll keep focusing on straws.

Avoid everything appliance related from Samsung. Horrible customer support, and they apparently even suck at paying the repair companies, so it is hard to get anyone to come work on your appliance. I will not own another Samsung appliance in my lifetime. I do however own a Samsung phone, so I am not a 100% hater just to hate, for what it is worth.
