Just did a PC Part Picket test... Even if you bought the cheapest B650/X670/B760/Z790 WiFi mother board & case & 750+W PSU, you would still pay more than this combo. It got me to $220, including bottom-of-the-barrel brands.

So, in my book, this is a decent deal.

Add AMD 8700G and 6000 RAM and you get a decent gaming PC without buying a GPU

$179 for the cheapest AM5 processor (and not a bad one, either). Add RAM for $80 or so and you are set for $460.(+ tax... actually, this isn't exactly a steal). Also note that there is an Intel equivalent to this setup that is also on sale for $200.

You want to stick with Intel if you are going to run Plex for hardware transcoding. Look for a processor with built in iGPU (non F version).
Why Intel over AMD? Just curious.

Appreciated thanks.
I've been using one of these but with the G5900 cpu for 2 years now. Installed Proxmox. It runs HA, Plex, Omada controller, and several docker containers. I did upgrade the ram to 16gb. Biggest problem is it can only hold one 3.5" hard drive and the hardware is HP proprietary. HP S01

Also, check out serverbuilds.net. Lots of good info there, though the group can be odd. https://forums.serverbuilds.net/tag/guide

My understanding is Plex doesn't have hardware transcoding support with AMD. Intel QuickSync can transcode with the iGPU rather than software. You do however need a plex pass for hardware transcoding support. Google Intel vs AMD plex.

Plex does support AMD hardware decode, but in a more limited fashion and QuickSync is by far the best performance/quality option out of the 3 choices. It also generally has the most robust support across various deployment types.

Note, for hardware acceleration in plex, you need to pay attention to what all is supported based upon OS used in combination with the hardware. It's not quite so straight forward yet.

Bro, you clearly haven't been following AM5 motherboard pricing lmao
They have wifi version of most mid-tier B650. If you are going for bottom of the barrel $120 board, then yea, you are missing wifi.

I used to say the same thing about Fry's.

I'm on the east coast and have a Micro Center store eight miles away.

Eight miles away aka 4 hour trip.

good deal but heres my take

Motherboard is very meh, 4phase doubled + 2 and no heatsink on the top vrms. dont expect this to run your 1000 core cpu, probably fine up to the 12 cores with airflow

also dont buy this to use the 8000 series apu chips, on paper they suck

You dont want to use these APUs with a dGPU, because they are gimped compared to normal CPUs, like the 8700G having half the L3 cache then the cheaper 7600x or 7700x has. 8700G still on PCIe 4.0, etc. I mean it will work, its just not recommended.

Terrible advice. An 8700G is $330 and it's GPU performance is worse than a $100 GPU. On top of that iGPUs need the fastest RAM (added expense) you can feed them, unlike dGPUs that have their own VRAM. If someone is looking for the highest FPS on tight budget they would be VASTLY better off with a $100 i3-12100F + $200 Arc A750 or $220 RX 6600, gaming performance would roughly be 3X higher than the 8700G for the same price. Obviously you sacrifice multi-thread performance, but most gamers dont care about that. AMD's APU pricing makes no sense for gamers, UNLESS they absolutely cant fit a GPU into their case (SFFPC), but that's a rare necessity.
This is pretty much what I did. i-3 12100f + AMD 6650XT from MC when it was on sale for $200.
