It's been cheaper, but I've been keeping my eye on this and could use it so I pulled the trigger. Thanks!

This appears to have heat issues due to the design based on what I read in some forums but otherwise good performance

I would strongly recommend against Arris, and the S33 in particular. I owned one for about 9 months before it crapped out. Worked great for about 6 months, worked unreliably for another 3 months, then died. These run very hot and I learned after it failed that death from heat is common. Some people keep a fan pointed at theirs.

Beyond the unreliable product, Arris customer support is truly the worst I have ever experienced. They offer a 2-year warranty. I called and got mine sent back for repair/replacement. The process was a headache, but they sent me a replacement. I was travelling and busy for a few weeks, so I didn't have a chance to install it right away (switched back to Charter modem in the interim). When I did get around to installing the replacement, I found that Arris had sent me a used modem with a pin stuck in the coax port. There's no way they could have even tested it with the pin in there. I tried my best but that pin was not coming out. The whole port needed to be replaced.

I called Arris back and they flat out refused to do anything about it. Evidently their 2-year warranty only covers one replacement, and if they send you junk and you don't notice within a 14-day window, you're out of luck.

TLDR: Original unit died after 9 months. Arris sent a broken replacement, then told me to pound sand.

This is a bad modem from a bad company. Lots of other 1-star reviews commenting on the heat and support issues. Save yourself the headache and stay far away.

I was lucky in that fiber rolled out in my area shortly after, so I switched. If I was still limited to cable internet, I think I would have gone with one of the Motorola DOCSIS 3.1 options.
