In the past the way it worked was if you needed 2 states for one federal return, you would have to pay for the second state download. However, if you installed turbotax on one computer and one state, that was free. If you installed turbotax on a second computer with a different state (one state), that also was free since it was only one state download. You could use the same serial number on both. Now, does anyone know if that still works because now you need to log in to your turbotax account to activate both installs and I do not know if they keep track of the number of state downloads now.
I think it's unlikely that they will tie the state download to the TT login. But with your method, you're still paying to e-file the state. If you had the Fidelity deal and used the online version, both states are completely free, including state e-file.

You don't necessarily have to pay for state e-file - you can print/mail it or directly e-file on the state's own site for free in many states. If you are preparing multiple returns (e.g. family members or friends), the desktop software still comes out ahead since I assume the Fidelity online offer is for one return only.

I'm curious about this is well. I predict they will tie the state download to the license. Maybe they didn't think about that for the first iteration or maybe they want to introduce this slowly to avoid upsetting customers, but I imagine it will happen at some point (if not already).

so i clear my cache and the 2 offers show up, free online and $5 download.
i've been using the online version for over 10 years since i need multi-state, but here's the problem now...
i click thru and start a return, add the states i want, then go to file so i can complete an order, but it still shows up at checkout with only 20% off.
anyone else have this problem? I dont plan to file until april but i want to avoid any last minute problems if i can.

Clear cache then Clear & Start Over in Tools. Then click through Fidelity's link again. Credit to mochi2 in the Bogleheads forum.
Unfortunately, the clear cache trick isn't working for me, I only see the 20% off after clicking the link that says I qualify for Premium free.
I called Fidelity and they said they are getting a lot of calls on this. They told me to just pay for it, take a screenshot of the payment confirmation, then call back and they will have me upload the screenshot, then refund the cost.
What a hassle. This isn't the first year I've had to go through this. Not sure if it's a Fidelity problem, or a Intuit problem, but it's been happening on and off for years. No one seems to be addressing the root cause.

I just got it to work on my wife's login, and it wasn't working the other day. Also, I had to go into TT and delete the return I had started last week when the discount was not working.

per my experience in prior years, state downloads are unique to each computer that installed it and are not tied to licenses. should be the same this year, even if they make you login during installation, they wouldn't lock down your state download

That was my experience too, but this is the first year they've required an Intuit account for activation. Obviously that's to reduce sharing of the license. It would be trivial for them to limit state downloads this way as well. I hope I'm wrong, but would like to hear personal experience first.

Tax Tools -> Tools -> Clear & Start Over.
If there are no risks, I'd love to buy one.
thanks.
