40 Years in the Army and the coldest place I've ever been was to Hokkaido. Colder than Korea, Alaska and a witch's brass bra combined. The Japanese are wonderful people and I hope to return...but not to Hokkaido. Too Cold for this California boy.

A friend went on the hellokitty plane last year 2023, and it seems like they cut a lot of the costs. Its now just paint on the outside and some cute tv animation themes. When I went on it when it first came out a while back, there was a hellokitty utinsel set, blankets, etc. YMMV but just a heads up that it may not be as "themed" as before post covid

I know. So disappointing. The flight attendants didn't even wear kitty aprons. Much disapointment.

We flew with EVA HelloKitty from DPS-SFO, we were excited while entering and leaving the plane because the outside painting is pretty. Inside? Nothing to write home about.

It's definitely the same as most of the Midwest in the USA during the winter. These days are for autumn though, so it won't be that bad at all. I was just in Hakodate for 5 days in southern Hokkaido.. It didn't get too much below freezing, but it does get very windy right off the ocean of course. We are going back up to Sapporo from Feb 4th to the 9th for the snow festival. It snows a lot up there though. Sapporo is a really cool place to visit, excellent variety of food. If you like sea urchin roe (uni), or crab/squid - it's the best place in Nihon in our opinion, so fresh.

I've been here in Nihon since Dec 5th with my nihonjin wife, we are heading back to the USA Feb 28th. It's a cool place to visit. The winters are nothing like the Northern states in the USA in winter though. The hello kitty jet looks pretty cool. Applause

japan is known to have some of the best snow in the world though so if you're into snowboarding/skiing, could be a solid pickup

With these fares, the mid-December dates may get you in the good snow at Niseko, but any earlier dates in December you will have snow but need luck for the good kind. I used to go to Niseko in late December/early January, and the snow there was unbelievably fluffy. At the highest point of the slopes, at 1000 meters in elevation, you can see each and every individual snow crystal which you can scoop up as if cotton balls.

Compared to Chicago, Sapporo isn't cold. I lived in Sapporo—which calls itself "the snowiest city in the world (with over 1 million people)"—and dealt with snows you just don't see in the Midwest. My main gripe was the snow and ice, not the temperatures. Even Indianapolis in winter is often colder than Sapporo.
Also, this isn't what I would call a great deal unless you're a die-hard Hello Kitty fan and require a direct flight to Hokkaido. If you watch for them, you can snag RT to Tokyo from Chicago sub-$700, and then take a cheap domestic flight up to New Chitose (Sapporo's airport) for around $100 if you play your cards right. It's fun to take the shinkansen up that way but that's much more expensive than a flight (yes, even with the JR Pass) and takes much longer.
