Not quite true, at least where you're laying blame.

In the US, for some reason, toothpaste is regulated as a drug, unlike other countries that regulate is as a cosmetic. Novamin was manufactured by NovaMin Technologies, which was acquired by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in late 2009. GSK wanted to make therapeutic claims about Novamin in their toothpaste, but drug labeling and advertising is heavily restricted in the US. GSK would have to get FDA approval, requiring they run the required studies to collect evidence to support those claims.

The projected increase in revenue did not justify the costs, so they decided to move on from Novamin, resulting in its disappearance from US markets as they stopped supplying it to makers.

The FDA never banned Novamin, nor did any President. It's gone because of the (admittedley) asinine way that toothpaste is regulated.

Here's the actual history:

Honestly didn't think I'd learn so much from a post about toothpaste.

What's the difference between all of these? Which type "normal toothpaste"?

Keep in mind Sensodyne in the USA no longer has Novamin (thank the president before last).

Gotta buy Canadian Sensodyne or elsewhere to get the stuff that really, really does a good job.
Did not know this... Thanks for the information.

That's a third party seller. Gray market import. Notice who it is sold by.

If the listing is correct, it should have Novamin. All the ones that do, say so on the packaging.

It wasn't banned in the US it was a company decision based on revenue figures. The formula is now considered a drug in the US and a cosmetic in the EU and most of the rest of the world.

They would have to pay for quite a few medical studies to get approved health labels which wasn't cost effective so they changed the formula for the US product.

You can still buy it on ebay. It wasn't any president's fault and we can all be a little bit more glad our standards are higher than Europe's (for once)

Are standards are higher or more regulation to benefit the lobbyists?

I didn't know Novamin was ever in the US market. My current batch of Sensodyn is from Canada but think I've had variant from India as well. Will keep going out of my way to get novamin for as long as it's an option
