If you buy these... SAVE YOUR RECEIPT
You will need it to file a claim when they leak and destroy your device

I have been buying these batteries for years from OD - every time they do the 100% rewards. I have never had one leak. Go figure.

What's the free shipping cutoff, or is there no free shipping anymore? NM, appears to be over $48 for free shipping, at least it shows free ship for 2 x 24 pk but not 2 x 16 pk. I wish they'd either allow mailed in ink recycling or open a store closer than 2 hours away for me. I got loads of inks and staples killed their rewards program so idk what I'm going to do with a couple hundred empty inks.

I've never used Office Depot Awards. Does this essentially mean if I sign up and buy $48 worth of batteries (2 $24 sets of AAAs), you get $48 in an Office Depot gift card of sorts?

That is correct. The "rewards" is actually a digital gift card that you can access by logging in to your account on their web page.
You can also just buy one item "Duracell® Coppertop AAA Alkaline Batteries, Pack Of 16 ..." for $15 and receive $15 in rewards. You don't get the tax back.
I usually recycle some ink/toner cartridges with it ($2 per cartridge, up to 10 recycled for $20 rewards) and do the product survey for $2 each unique item.

That's a dollar per battery before rewards while at Costco you get the 40 pack for $21 hassle free and you can wait for a discounted deal.

yep same here. Only leaks I've seen here things left in for like 4yrs+ unused but that's with any battery and typically a crappy product.

I'm not seeing any indication of the 100% reward back. Usually there's a message about it.

*I found the ad link and followed through there just to be sure. Weird as usually there's a message during checkout that it will qualify for 100% reward back and I am not seeing it this time.
