My two cents. Booked my family of 4 on spirit to Cancun last week. Flight was cancelled the night before. No explanation whatsoever. Next flight out with them was fully booked too, so we had to pay $$$ to book with another carrier same day. Still haven't even gotten our refunds yet.

Spirit is great when everything goes right. But when things go wrong as they inevitably do, you're farked.

next time just add the bag via the app. you can do that last minute, even once you've already checked in. it's cheaper.

Looks like Frontier in Atlanta is also matching some of the dates in addition to going beyond March 6.

Also Pro Tip: If you're able to purchase Spirit or Frontier tickets at the airport they will waive the online Passenger Usage Fee. It can vary per flight but it's usually $22 each ticket and per segment/layover.

So for example I had a flight from Atlanta to Seattle for $74. There was a layover in Las Vegas so that took an additional $22 off on top of the standard airport discount. In total I paid about $60 roundtrip.

Went to Cancun a few years ago. Price gouging on par with Las Vegas and the like. Can't imagine it's any better now.

You just described a situation with any airlines. Better yet you just described a situation with any aspect of life not just Spirit.

I used my mileage points redeemed a round trip ticket, but flight got cancelled, never got the mileage points back ...

Flying from an airport that has multiple flights to your destination, or booking an itinerary that won't cost you an arm and a leg if you're late/miss it. EG don't book a huge non-refundable all inclusive package/cruise/whatever and then buy a discount plane ticket that may cause you to forfeit some or all of the continuation of the trip on the other end. Or buy trip insurance.

Don't think any airline would.
Southwest is way different than Spirit (or Frontier, or Allegiant are the other two I can think of). Other than at a major hub for those airlines most flights to most destinations are one flight a day, and often only fly the leg every couple days. IE if your flight doesn't go the day before big concert sportsing event you have a ticket to the next flight that you won't have to pay for yourself may not be until the day after.

Spirit airlines is currently working to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy since they couldn't merge with JetBlue. Be very CAREFUL booking with them as they're already known as a "cancel flight last minute" airline and don't help the customer get to/from their destination. The risk just isn't worth it especially internationally (unless you have family near and around Cancun as a fallback).

100% this! We went to Puerto Rico for vacation. We were supposed to fly back just a day before a major hurricane was due to hit. The hurricane decided to show up early, half a day in advance. Spirit Airlines, our carrier, just cancelled our flight. They didn't bother to tell us! It was pure luck my friend decided to check on our flight. The agent was like, "Oh, your flight's cancelled." No heads-up or anything! We were shocked, to say the least. The ticket that initially cost us around $200 suddenly turned into a $900 escape plan on JetBlue.
