Reminder that the blood oxygen feature is disabled for new US buyers. Couldn't find the model number in this listing, but affected models end with "LW/A".

It's disabled for new IMPORTS. So if this came in on a container ship on Dec 24 it'll have it, if it came in yesterday it won't.

I suspect you'll just have to examine the model number when it arrives, I doubt Amazon's inventory tracking is that discriminating so you should be prepared to send it back if that's a deal breaker for you. However if they are on top of things that well the item details indicate model MRJ33LL/A.

The pricing on these is always a mess on Amazon. I bought this yesterday, when the price dropped, but with the S/M band. $483. Now that model is $568 and this one is $433. I need the S/M band, but I also could have just bought a new band with the $50 price difference... that said, likely not worth a return now. Wonder if they'll do a price adjustment...? I doubt it.

Can't they disable it via a software update?

FYI: I added AppleCare on the product page (on mobile browser) and when I checked out, the entire amount was credited out of no-rush. Not sure if this is reproducible or not, but worth a try. I purchased the same M-L last week from desktop browser and AppleCare was paid for out of my default payment

This is an insane discount I've never seen on Stainless current models. I got them just because... SD makes me broke. I can probably sell my 8's and only spend $130 for the new version, making it a steal!

Now, I wonder if 45mm will be worth upgrading to (I've been on the 38/41 for years)

Doesn't solve your original issue but ebay has a lot of original bands for $20ish.

Isn't 45mm $660 vs 41mm $430?

I'm still salty about missing the $318 deal on the series 8 SS from Best Buy. I actually placed the order and got a confirmation number, then never received an email from them and their customer service chat said the order did not exist. This seems like a decent deal on the latest model, though. I'm quite tempted.

Indeed, thanks. Since I'd have to buy a new band, anyway, I'm trying to see it as "only" overpaying by ~$25. I was plenty happy with $483 (especially with 5% back via Amazon card). I know S10 is supposed to bring a big redesign, and I may well be tempted to upgrade, but this is a great price either way!

Sure. They could disable the clock itself via software update. But this isn't a thing they *want* to do, it's a thing they're being forced to do. And the agency forcing it is the International Trade Commission, whose authority is over import/exports. For whatever reason (I just don't care enough about this issue to read very closely) the company claiming that Apple has violated their patent didn't seek (or didn't get?) an injunction against the domestic sale of the watch, they ended up in this forum. So Apple was enjoined against importing the watches that violated the patent until they disabled the functionality; SE watches were never paused since they don't have that feature.

It may be that Apple is free to keep selling it in international markets or maybe they've been slapped separately in the EU or who the fark knows. But the reason there's watches in the US that won't check blood O2 is because that's the only way they could get the import ban lifted. IIRC Mossimo opposed this too saying that the patent is violated by the hardware and it shouldn't be allowed to go forward (because they want the leverage for their negotiations) but Apple was allowed to go this route.

TL;DR there's no current indication Apple would disable this functionality for already sold devices and it's unlikely they would since that would just open them up to a class action lawsuit from customers; it's more likely they'd just pay the greenmail to license the patent but they're gonna fight that as long as they can first.
