Since they are less than 50% of new, buy two. All drives fail 100%. Mechanical issues tend to concentrate in the first two years (these are used) so they may already be 2+ years old so in effect this may help you. You can pay a few more shekels for drives w/ a 5 year warranty if you look around.

MDD is goharddrives white label drive w/ 5 year warranty. I have many of them not a single failed. OOS drives fail manufacturer recert, so there is some parameter or a physical ding on the case (which doesn't harm it because they have g sensors) and they burn OOS firmware on it so you can't update it -- but TBH I haven't updated firmware in a drive in almost 10 years.

If you buy one (even new) I beat them up for a week straight and look for any errors or overheating

These are Ent drives w/ 24x7 duty cycle and 550TBW per year which is crazy. They are meant to be beat up.

These drives are great in a NAS, Server, DAS etc. I have Seagate Enterprise drives in 4, 6, 8, 12, 14, 16 and 18TB deployed, and few have failed. Usually the older ones. Been using 12TB and bigger for 2 years and no fails yet. Had one 8TB fail but it was replaced under warranty. A couple of 4TB failed after 3-5 years, I replaced those with bigger ones. 6TB ones still running 24/7 for 6 years straight, only 1 out of 17 has failed think.

I always buy new though. I use them at work, so I want less issues, I may just try a refurb, but in system where its ok if it fails, like running Raid 6 or 60.

Because many of these are close to new. They aren't drives that have been running 3 years and then failed. They are new drives that have had issues and have been factory repaired.

checking how/who refurbished makes a difference, but I'm running 4 of these type myself with no problems.

Note, if you are not familiar, enterprise drives are LOUD!

friends dont let friend buy seagate

but honestly, from personal experience, (might just be my luck) the only HD that failed on me were seagate.

Will wait for a deal on their site to save on tax. The price right now is comparable (155 vs 160).

Does anyone know if hdd's are expected to keep getting cheaper or is there some shortage going on? I'd like to wait for a deal on 20/22TB drives.

Raid is redundancy. The chance of all your drives failing at the same time is unlikely. You should have a off site backup plan regardless of a new drives or refurbished.
