FreetaxUSA is the best!
TurboTax desktop is more powerful and has fewer upsells. For example, Deluxe handles investment income, rental income, etc. Online forces you to upgrade to Premiere for these things. Also, with the desktop, your data is not in the cloud, only your local PC. Desktop allows you to complete multiple federal returns for one fixed price, but online charges for each return. Online versions do let you work from any device seamlessly, including mobile. They also keep a copy of your return for future years or as an archive.

As for free versions for people that don't qualify for Free File, Cash App taxes is totally free (federal and state) and should work for the vast majority of people. there are a few things that aren't supported like multistate taxes. FreeTaxUSA is free for federal e-file and $15 for state e-file. OLT.com is similar.

If your state supports it, you can e-file directly on the state dept of revenue website for free.
For those who have Costco membership, for the same price you get 10$ additional discount in product add-on which can be used for state e-file fee.

The free options are no Joke. If I was in my early 20s, the first listed would have worked well. I'm a teacher and show my kiddos who got their first job to use that one to get their money back. May not be in the math curriculum, but man do they pay attention.

Thank you to the max! Many students need to understand these basic things in life… often just thrown to the wild lol

It's the IRS. If you want this changed, the IRS has to change their rules. Apparently the AGI for free file increased from $73,000 to $79,000 this year. They do have free fillable forms on the IRS website.

Also, the IRS suggests you may not always want to file jointly anyway. You can choose to file individually.

If you missed out on the Amazon deal in December or late November, then this is a good option. I paid $35.99 in November for Deluxe when factoring in the $10 Amazon gift card. I doubt you'll see it much lower than this as tax day isn't far off now.

This Turbotax software edition and the Turbotax Online edition are two different things. I'd rather pay more for doing my taxes using Turbotax Online, because it saves from year to year (but of course it costs more); it also includes more features and doesn't act as dumb if you have cryptocurrency records and stuff.

I have business taxes and I usually do taxes for two or three other people so I just get the software version.
It's just easier for me when I work on it here and there until it's done.

Intuit TurboTax is the reason the IRS doesn't have a free tool. They lobby congress to stop the IRS from doing what other countries have done for decades.

Don't give them money. They litterally turn around and screw you with that money.

The online version actually has less features than the download version. You're forced to buy premiere for all sorts of things online, whereas desktop deluxe does just about everything (despite the marketing tables that suggest otherwise). It handles crypto just fine too. And there is no issue importing from year to year, but you do have to save those files yourself. You could put them on dropbox or something similar if you're worried about losing them.
