TurboTax desktop is more powerful and has fewer upsells. For example, Deluxe handles investment income, rental income, etc. Online forces you to upgrade to Premiere for these things. Also, with the desktop, your data is not in the cloud, only your local PC. Desktop allows you to complete multiple federal returns for one fixed price, but online charges for each return. Online versions do let you work from any device seamlessly, including mobile. They also keep a copy of your return for future years or as an archive.

As for free versions for people that don't qualify for Free File, Cash App taxes is totally free (federal and state) and should work for the vast majority of people. there are a few things that aren't supported like multistate taxes. FreeTaxUSA is free for federal e-file and $15 for state e-file. OLT.com is similar.

If your state supports it, you can e-file directly on the state dept of revenue website for free.

For those who have Costco membership, for the same price you get 10$ additional discount in product add-on which can be used for state e-file fee.

Have any of you who have purchased Turbotax in the past had problems with it asking again for an activation code even though you activated it on your computer already? The codes can be used up to 5 times I think, but I have past tax years that I've been unable to run again because it asked again for activations even though they had been done multiple times already.

What is advantage of using desktop vs in browser? How come there is 0 free versions for couples filing together making over 65k a year (each)? With kids and stuffs…
The difference is that the web versions may send your personal tax info to Facebook.

The desktop versions don't.

Tax prep sites gave millions of taxpayers' info to Facebook and Google

As for free versions, you can file for free using TurboTax through your Credit Karma account, regardless of your income. This free filing offer ends February 9th.

Or, you can file for free through CashApp.

I'm never buying the download version again. They nickel and dime you to file state and random shit at the end. With the online version you can start for free and don't need to pay until you get to the end and all the costs are transparent. Last year even with the deluxe download deal for $35, I still ended up paying like $70 to e-file.

Wow, I feel the opposite way, but maybe because I've been using it for years and know the drill. The download is clearer about the costs up front and there are fewer upsells in general, but the pricing model is different. Access to the state forms and state e-file are separate fees, with access to 1 state forms include in the "+state" version. You can always print your state and mail it in for free though. Alternatively, some states allow you to e-file directly with their dept of revenue for free by transcribing the data onto their site. I think Intuit has had to work on making their pricing more clear since they've been in trouble with the federal government on this issue, so it seems to have improved from a cursory glance.

I feel like they would be pretty dumb to continue this practice now that they've been caught, but you never know. There's nothing to stop them from doing it with the desktop version, but if they haven't in the past, I wouldn't expect them to get started after this bad publicity.

That said, Intuit did once install malware with TurboTax desktop to try to prevent piracy: https://www.extremetech.com/archi...nst-intuit

This made some PCs unbootable by writing to the boot sector: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tur...boot_track

Now, both of these were 20 years ago, but it's consistent with how this company continues to act.

Two years ago, I had similar issues. it turned out to be anti-maleware or anti-virus software, which I deleted. So far, I have upgraded to Windows 11 Pro and have no issues.

Cash App is totally free (including state filing) with no income restrictions and includes all of the various 1099 filings as well. It used to be through Credit Karma and this is my 4th year using it.

Don't ever forget that Intuit TurboTax has spent more than 20 years lobbying/paying the federal government to prevent YOU from being able to file your taxes for free.

Source: Link here [propublica.org].

They are a garbage company, and you should 100% avoid them at all costs.

Options? If your adjusted gross income was less than $79,000, the IRS has a number of free filing options [irs.gov] for you.
Alternatively, my personal preference is FreeTaxUSA. Return numbers always look the same as the other company's (like TurboTax), and they charge far less, and never were horrible enough to lobby the government.

If you do more then 5 efile. Turbotax isnt good no more. Before you can install in 5 computer. And those 5 computer can each efile 5 times for a total of 25 efile. But now its 5 efile across all 5 computer. This is because turboxtax change to a login installation activation.

Agree 100%
Just so there's no confusion to readers here - no income limit for FreeTaxUSA if you're not going through Free File. It is $15 for state though. OLT is similar but $10 for state. Cash App taxes is totally free for state and federal, regardless of income, but does have a few limitations.

The Costco Prices are better overall as they include a $10 credit.
