I love Costa Rica. Beautiful country, great people, super friendly. Tons of beaches, warm water.

downsides: about the same prices as the US, food/goods are "normal" US prices. Rental cars are expensive.

This is to Liberia, which is the smaller, more northern airport. It's the perfect airport if you are flying into Guanacaste, and towns like Tamarindo (beach town from Endless Summer 2). Guanacaste is only very moderately developed. (Movie theater, supermarket, a couple towers now I think)

Personally, I flew into San Jose, rented a 4x4, drove across the country to Tamarindo and stayed there for three weeks. I drove up and down the coast, stopping at every sign that said "playa" something. Every one was perfect. Usually some locals there, but often empty. The tourists usually stay at the all inclusives, of which there are many. Westin Playa Cochal has an amazing beach, but I went to it the locals way, by parking a half mile away and walking in on the shore.
We went to the volcano and wildlife refuge near Liberia, a zipline / animal park place over by the Rio resort. Drove hours down the coast to a beach where the turtles lay. Hired a local authorized guide to take us into the laying grounds and watch the crows eat 60% of the turtles eggs.

crossed to the center of the country and went to La Fortuna, volcano driven hot springs. resorts and casual places, I want to rent a place around the lake out there sometime. It's giant.

Then rented an air bnb in the eastern mountains, had a wonderful host family that helped us line up white water rafting and day trips to the coffee farm and waterfalls where we saw monkeys and sloths and an armadillo.

15/10 trip, and I saw barely a third of the country. Just stay away from Jaco unless you're partying. We had zero issues with crime or safety, but there is petty crime and tourist grifts, especially in the city.

There's basically something for everyone though. And you can do it fairly cheap, or spend a ton. Helps if you speak spanish.

I'm going to liberia on Thursday and cannot wait! To anyone on the fence about costa rica, the guanacaste region is amazing! This is our 2nd time visiting. Too bad February prices are not as low..

Stay outside of Tamarindo and eat local and you should be good. But also know that costa rica is not a cheap destination and I feel like that's a common misconception.
