The one on the right side zips closed, but the left one is open. The zippered pocket is large enough to fit a wallet and a smaller phone (which is convenient for me) but not quite as large as typical cargo pants. I use the open one for pens and stationery (work related). I got a green pair last time they were this price and they quickly became my favorite pair of pants.
The fit is awesome (for me. This obviously varies a lot from person to person) and I like the practicality of the side pockets without the bulk and image of standard cargo pants. The internal pockets probably aren't as good for large, bulky items, but they've been great for my use.

I forget which brand i got- maybe Wrangler (not cargo though)- that pockets dropped past mid-thigh level...I really appreciated that feature.

Without cover flap they're not secure (and some have a small velcro sticker inside opening), and zipper a major pain + may not tolerate overuse.
They look good though.
Maybe they can develop a guayabera with flapped cargo pockets.

For me, it's mostly a fit and aesthetic thing though. They fit me well and look way better/nicer than standard cargo pants, but still offer 90% of the added functionality. For me, the extra pockets regularly come in handy but I never need anything more.
