Having said all that, the one time I used them biking them let me hear traffic and vehicles far better than any pass through so I felt safer and the audio quality was enough for a podcast or some "set the pace" music.
I might buy a second set as I have no idea how durable they will be and this is a "disposable" product price tag.
I didn't bother sending them back. They just went into that box we all have of things we have tried and just stopped using for whatever reason. I did buy Shokz bone conductors (yes, more expensive) and have been using and recommending them.

I know there are many more expensive over ear styles out there but I'd hate to lose a $200 pair for this one use case

But for those more narrow situations in which I want to hear my surroundings but due to the activity the shoulder speakers won't be ideal these could come in handy occasionally. It's niche, but maybe worth a try at this price.

This allows me to have one less thing to carry. And I never forget my Bluetooth because it's always connected to my glasses. I like how there is nothing in my ear and I can hear everything else around me.
No one can hear it unless its really loud. I keep it on low and no one has given me dirty looks or anything. And family says they can't really hear it.
Besides it's a lot better than those who play videos out of the speaker phone. Or let their kids play games with the volume up high.
As for needing a rubber band, the rubber pads flip from thin to thick. For my glasses I need to keep one thin and the second on thick and it stays in place as my glasses frame go from thin to thick.
$10 I say give it a try. I'm buying 2 more for family. They like the idea of nothing in the ear.
And that's my experience. Good luck 👍
Downsides: I had thin metal frames. These earpods come with tiny rubber collars that are supposed to help them fit different types of frames, but I lost these pretty quickly. Drop one and it's gone. They would not stay on even with the rubber collars. They're heavy and need to be as close to the ear as possible, because if they slide down the sound drops off. If they did slide down, they pulled the glasses off my nose. And they did slide down. So if you have the right frames, they're OK value for this price but I wouldn't pay anything like retail for them. The custom charging cable was a nuisance but not a deal breaker.
They may be useless if you have the wrong frame, though so ymmv. I ended up deploying duct tape and they still wouldn't stay in place that well on those frames. For ten bucks though, not much to lose (in either sense).
