Harbor Freight Heat Gun (corded)

Normal price: $20, on sale frequently for $15 (or less)

This is something like an 86%-90%+ discount compared to this cordless Ridgid.

Heat guns are something with a finite lifespan -- as much as they don't advertise it, the heating elements inside are rated for X hours of use. So it's not a matter of IF you'll be replacing them, but when. The Ridgid has a "Lifetime Service Agreement", which is NOT a warranty. It just means IF they think it failed in a manner they want to repair, then YOU can pay for shipping and send it to an independent tool repair shop that is "approved" by ridgid, hoping that they don't make it worse.

Harbor Freight's add-on 2 year warranty coverage is just $5 more...and you can drop the device off in person and get a replacement off the shelf that very same day. No fuss, no muss.

So ask yourself, is going cordless worth the 86-90% price savings? Or are you the sort of person who thinks that if you simply spent more, you got something better?
If you ever have a problem with a Ridgid tool, when you open a claim, they send you a prepaid label to ship it to them and they fix or replace it. It really couldn't be much easier. https://claims.ridgidpower.com/

Additionally, your cheap HF tool is corded. It does not come with batteries or a charger, which is the majority of the value of this deal. You're comparing apples to rutabagas.

The idea of a cordless heat gun is neat, but.....

Most corded heat guns are ~1500W and output about 5100 BTU. This Ridgid is rated at only 1100 BTU. There are probably some use cases where the lower heat output could be beneficial, but to anybody considering this tool, don't go into it thinking you'll be getting normal corded heat gun power & performance.

Most of the big name brands heat guns are abysmal. Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch, Ridgid, DeWalt.

It's funny but Metabo HPT has the best heat gun with 2 temp settings, a digital gauge where you can set the tempurature and ez collet where you can remove the attachment without actually touching it.

I've sent stuff in for Ridgid a few years back -- nothing was prepaid, I had to foot the bill both ways....OR I could drive the nearly 2 hours to the nearest "authorized" repair shop. Which i looked up and had mostly 1 and 2 star reviews on Google.

The first repair didn't fix anything, so I had to send it out AGAIN...on my dime.

Given it was for a $60 impact driver, after it was all said and done, it would have been cheaper to go to the store and just buy a new one -- and send the old one to the dump.

-----

And yes, the HF heat gun is corded. I made no attempt to hide that. Some corded things work FAR better than cordless -- and the corded HF performs around 3-4x better than the cordless Ridgid....at nearly a 1/10th of the cost.

So yes, apples and rutabagas indeed!
In the past, like with most tool company warranties, we had to get our tools to a service center for repair/replacement under the LSA. For most of us, that was our local Home Depot's rental center, so not that big of a deal. Batteries were handled with a simple phone call.

Now, if you'd check the link I posted, you just start a claim online and get a prepaid FedEx label to ship in the tool. They repair or replace your tool and ship it back to you.

And yes, if you don't need or want a cordless heat gun, then go corded.

But still gonna get this cause I have too many RIDGID batteries to not get this.
Most of this deal is the battery and charger. If you have too many batteries, I don't understand buying more batteries. I'm just curious. Many of my purchases (especially deals) are certainly questionable too.

With 2 batteries currently at $80 I don't see the value in this kit, a cordless heat gun for $70 is pretty meh unless I need it for a common use.

Yeah you don't have to pay for shipping anymore. I just sent a tool in for service and got a brand new tool back. No cost out of my pocket but did take about 3.5 weeks from when I sent it out till I got it back.

You're paying mostly for the batteries here. The heat gun in itself doesn't cost a lot less. Besides a cordless option is always handy if you're working on a roof, ceiling, or a place where an outlet might be ways away.

The heat gun costs around $100 normally. It's very ridiculously expensive for what you're getting. Even at $50, it'd still significantly more expensive and under-performing than its wired counterparts.

That's the past. Ridgid's Service Direct Program is fairly new and improved.

Let me clarify, I have just enough batteries to start being invested in RIDGID but I don't have an excess of batteries.

But with the recent positive changes to LSA it's hard not to switch to RIDGID.

How much is the inverter though?

A good use case for something like this would be a guy who does tints for a living. I read a review he loved not being corded when working on cars.
