8GB RAM, slower single channel 256GB SSD, 60Hz display, last generation chip, new model on the way in less than a month. It's a pass for me.

But the base model really should released with 16gm RAM and 1TB SSD. We'll probably only get 12gb and 512gb on the next spec bump in 2025 😐. I'm doubtful they will increase this year.
Given that they "lowered" the price of the 14" model, but gave it 8gb of RAM, I can not hopeful.

the fact we still only have 8gb ram in 2024 is insane. My phone has 8gb ram since 2021💀

So Apple sells many MBAs, which is why an article last month suggested that Jon Ivey was shut down from combining the Air & Pro due to such hefty sales.

Now, knowing that the MBA is a CONSUMER product, and that most stores will carry the base model....it's heavily implied that most MBA consumers are using...8gb of ram.

Why should Apple switch to anything else if most folks have zero issues with it???? That doesn't make sense, eh? Every time there's a deal that's posted the ram crying crew comes out but I don't truly think they've used an entry-level MBA....OR their use cases are so big that it'd be foolish to use an entry-level MBA.

What I'm typing is the consumer are speaking, and they're saying that they don't care. Why not just get the upgraded MBA and beat your feet?
Because it can't be upgraded later. If it were not soldered on, 8gb would be fine. These are disposable products artificially.

Pretty good price if you need an entry level Mac laptop with large screen. I like the size and portability. It's really light for a 15" laptop.

Its a total of 8 ounces heavier than the 13. 3.3 vs 2.75 lbs. You might want to hit the gym if you think thats heavy. The dimensions are larger but its not like a portable desktop.
I have both 13 and 15 M2 Air and the 15 incher does feel significantly less portable.

With the 13 I can just lift and go, hold with 1 palm and type with the other while running around. The 15 is also doable but I have to be more deliberate about it.

There's just more surface area and more weight. It's hard facts, what's there to get pissy about?

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but the most obnoxious thing about Apple going with 8GB ram in the base model is that finding a 16gb model is IMPOSSIBLE.

If you try to order a 16gb model from Apple directly, it pushes the delivery out a week or two. If you try to buy one from literally any other store, most only have it with a 1TB SSD in midnight blue.

So in my case, it was $999 for the 8gb/256 or $1199 for the 8gb/512 or $1599 for the 16gb/1000 because the 16/512 was out of stock. Now even that isn't an option anymore.

That's what really stinks. Making 8gb standard made it almost impossible to get 16gb. And I don't care what Apple says, 16gb should be the minimum when the iphone 15 comes with 6gb ram. Does it make a difference? YES IT DOES. Even something as simple as having too many browser tabs open will start to make an impact on those 8gb machines. I say that from experience.

Ultimately I went with the 8gb/512gb model because I have a powerful desktop... I can live with a lightweight laptop. I would never recommend 8gb ram for your only computer.

The base config these days should be 16/512. Apple acts like its 2005 with hard drive space. 512 Min. They keep focused on high margin on the base model and then to get to 16/512 its much higher.

I have an M2 Macbook Pro with 8GB of RAM for work and would NEVER buy this. After the last update, and after reboot, I sit at 7/8GB used RAM. This thing chugs. What a piece of crap.
I have a bade model M1 Mac Mini with 8gb of ram and it runs pretty smooth. I run 3 monitors (using a Displaylink hub). One a 34" Ultrawide, a 27" and a 48" OLED I use for full screen video playback. It works great. It does sit with 7GB of the 8 used all the time. But that's mostly from each tab running in Safari. I would imagine you're running lots of background programs or have many tabs open. My system is in no way future proofed, it'll have problems here eventually but your M2 should be totally fine.

Serious question, what do you have open? My wife wants something like this for home. Most of her work is browser based (she's a teacher - and they use Macs there) and, she might use some Office type applications (sheets, ppt, etc.). She currently has a 13" M1 MacBook Air at work and it's fine. Is the M2 with 8GB RAM that bad?
I've been using an 8GB M2 13 inch MBA for personal stuff for the past year. Similar to your use case, just browser apps, media streaming, Word/Excel/Powerpoint, terminal, and some Java development in Eclipse and have zero issues. My previous personal laptop was a 2013 13 inch MacBook Air that still works fine for browsing so I expect this one will last another 10 years. Well worth the $950 I paid for it about a year ago at Costco.

8gb is unacceptable in 2024. Apple like to give you just enough so you upgrade earlier.

I need someone to convince me to get a MacBook at 13 inches because as a coder I don't know how y'all code with that little bitty screen while I need 3 screens to be on the same time

Apparently Apple fans are angry about this take and it's worthy of 7 downvotes.

You sound like a dbag when you suggest someone to go to the gym for complaining about the weight of a laptop. You have no idea about the person's size, age, and health condition(s).

Also, every ounce counts when you are traveling including but not limited to weight restrictions on carry-ons, especially international carriers. Perhaps if you get out of the gym and go see the world, you might know this.

It works fine for normal browsing and office applications. But the same one with 16 GB is an awesome machine. You never need to replace which apple does not want.
