Is this a good deal for a college student? Not too sure about the RAM
It depends. Unlike all the people who do not know what they are talking about, you should be fine with 8GB ram for your college needs, however, the 256GB SSD will kill you down the line, especially if you have to install lot of open source applications. Get something with at least 512GB storage
For those arguing 8gb is enough - will it be enough in a couple of years when the OS upgrade rolls out? I don't want to spend 1k+ for basic web browsing and have a couple years out of it. It's a lot of money for a "basic" machine however good it is.
If paying a premium price expect premium to last more than a few years. Yes it's close to 16 go on windows but definitely not the same ( below 16gb windows performance).
I think 8gb Mac's and Mac's with M chips are overpriced for what they bring. Sure the chips are clever and fast. But they don't deliver the same performance for dollar as the intel based Mac's did.

the new model with everything YOU want (16GB RAM, multi-channel 512GB SSD, 120Hz display, M3 chip) will cost $2000, if you can even get all that
