It definitely isn't for everyone especially at this price point but for my needs it is pretty much perfect. There are pros and cons and it may not be the device for you.

To answer some questions:

- Yes you are required to own a PS5 to use this.
- No you do not need to be on the same network as the PS5.
- It does work over the internet back to your PS5 at home which I have done. (Recommend you hardwire your PS5 though)
- It serves no other function than playing your PS5 on a mobile device.
- It does not have Bluetooth.
- it has a standard headphone jack.
- If you want wireless headphones you have to purchase Sony's "Pulse Explore" headphones.
- The controller functions just as a standard PS5 controller with all the features. (Trackpad is a soft button using the touchscreen)
- It cannot connect to WiFi that requires a captive portal as there is no built-in browser to accept terms etc…

As a side note:
I own both a Backbone and this. They each have their pros and cons. The Backbone was by no means a bad setup. I loved it. I just didn't prefer the smaller screen I was using and the layout of the buttons compared to a standard PS5 controller. The Backbone using a phone did have the big advantage of being able to connect to any type of WiFi and some of the concerns people have about having to remove their case to use it didn't apply to me because I just dedicated one of my old phones sitting around to this.

One other thing is that they do make the PS Remote Play app for the iPad and you can use a Bluetooth controller with it so that could be an option for those who already own an iPad and want a bigger screen than this.

At the end of the day it's not for everyone and there are other options out there like installing Chiaki on a hacked Switch or a Steam Deck. That app can allow you to do PS5 Remote Play on your existing mobile gaming device. For the Switch you of course need one that's running custom firmware though. So that is a potential issue for some.

I was eager to get one of these but then I learned it doesn't smoothly handle multiple profiles. That's a killer for me so I'll go for a more expensive steam deck like device.
Nice for those who this works for

Can I ask if this is better than the Backbone for Android? I have a Samsung S23 Ultra and thought about getting the Backbone for half the price.
Much much better. I bought the backbone and returned it after a few hour playing. The backbone need to take the phone case off. In terms of ps5 streaming, ps portal is the best device due to screen size, the dual shock and adaptive trigger.

It's basically a better screen WiiU controller. I can't justify $200 for it.
Backbone msrp is $99, almost the resolutions of all phones are 16 to 10, and the screen physical ratio is not 16 to 9 either. It doesn't not perfectly match the 16 to 9 video output of ps5.

plus with additional $100, you get a much larger screen, dual shock and adaptive trigger. Actually I spend much more time lying down on bed with ps portal instead of sitting in front of TV to play ps5.

If you are willing to bring the massive PS5 with you to a hotel why wouldn't you just plug it into the tv?
At what point didn't I say I brought a PS5 with me to a hotel?

Sony's great at selling consoles, games, not so much.
You're kidding right? Sony is the game making platform. Look at all the money Microsoft is dumping into studio acquisitions and they still can't develop enough games to compete with the unique exclusives Sony has on PlayStation.

You probably should have bought some then. People are snagging these up and reselling them for around $300 online. Looking at sold listings the prices vary but one just sold today on eBay for $316.

I'm just glad I waited and snagged one when it was in stock.

I'd prefer not to drain my battery though. I think $150 for this is the sweet spot

I don't know why, but I play with this more than my tv/ps5 now.

For me, the major reason for this change is due to I don't need to wear glasses with ps portal
