you are partially correct. It depends on whether or not you need VPN and the login protocol of the cruise line internet. The one I posted works with all protocols including EAP. Even the more expensive ones sometimes dont have EAP. I had the slate model but upgraded first to the Beryl AX model, since on paper that seemed better. But actually using it tells you what the issues were. The Beryl AX didnt have EAP, only worked with an older version of software (with bugs) and it ran hot. Had issues connecting to my VPN and couldnt get VPN to work reliably. So even though it was newer and more expensive and better on paper, it had fewer capabilities, I finally ended up with hte version I posted, had EAP, ran on a more updated firmware, was power efficient and never got hot and was fast enough. It paid for itself many times over on the cruise. (Saved me 2 people x $15/day x 16 days) = $480.) It was worth it spending $90 for certainty vs $20 uncertainty prior to the trip. Yes it was 4x the cost of the $20 model, but if it didnt work, it would have cost me a lot more than the additional money

BTW, I see posts all the time of people that claim model X is better based on specs, but actually never tried it. Wish they would put disclaimers and not be so certain of their claims. (Not talking about your post). Most important for a travel router to me is useability.

These are older obsolete versions. For me, they arent worth the bother despite the low cost. IF you want a travel router, I highly recommend this one:

I used it on a recent cruise with it plugged into an Anker phone battery and it worked as a hotspot all over the ship for my family. Worked perfectly. Also used it in VPN mode to connect back to my home network and while slow, worked OK. (It was slow because the ship internet speed was slow. )

What irritated me when I got the beryl AX was that the firmware was several versions behind and there were lots of bugs fixed in the newer versions. Also no EAP support, which is used evidently on some cruise ships. So it is nice to know that they will update the firmware and include EAP support. What I gathered from the experience is that when GL releases new hardware, it takes several years (yes years) before they get around to updating the firmware. So getting a version several years old is a way to go, but not so old that it is obsolete and they stop supporting it.

What also people dont mention is that support for these items is really poor. You need to be an expert to address issues. The community blog is decent, but dont expect it to be user friendly. I have owned and used the mango, the slate and the one I ended up with.

You would need a single connection, which you will have to pay for. This device would then allow you take that single connection and share it with many other devices. But you still have to have that one connection for it to hook up to. It also requires some configuration. Not a plug and play solution.

fwiw, I happen to own this GL.iNet travel router [amazon.com] which looks like the Mango router. On my recent cruise on Princess, I used it to share my ship's wifi access from my cabin to my son in the adjacent cabin. And yes, it connects to the ship's wifi and reboadcasted it via its own SSD. This little router range is only to adjacent cabins. So while my wife had her own wifi on her phone, accessible throughout the boat, mines was tied to my router in the room so it was limiting but I dealt with it. Yes, I could switch the ship's wifi access to my phone and to the GL.iNet router but I never knew when my son was going to be in his cabin so I went w/o internet access until I got back to the room.

You set it up as a wifi repeater. Effectively log into your GL.iNet router, have it connect to the external wifi network (aka the ship's wifi or test on using your home wifi), set to repeater mode, and that's pretty much it. Anyone able to connect to the travel router's SSID will access the internet via it repeating/sharing the ship/home's wifi access. Get it working at home and the process will be the same on a ship.

You have to pay for at least one wifi access that you then share via this router. And the shared wifi range is small, aka limited to adjacent cabins. I guess you could carry it around with you using a portable power bank but only folks near you would be able to use it's shared wifi network.

I should done my homework better, definitely an impulse purchase. The Amazon price was only $4 more so with the easy returns, I'll stick with Amazon but appreciate the heads up. Knowing that the Beryl AX will get EAP in the future makes this worthwhile to me

So my main case uses for this would be:

1) Be able to connect to a hotel ethernet and broadcast WIFI to multiple devices. The router needs to be able to access & log in to the hotel's authentication system.

2) Buy data when traveling abroad for one phone and be able to share that data with multiple devices.

3) Be super compact.


Can someone suggest a GL.inet device that check those boxes?

works great since it has a built in battery but randomly drops from the source wifi for some reason. (sometimes less than 20min)
This is mainly the reason why i want to buy another travel router.

I probably need a firmware upgrade but the company that created the FileHub no longer supports it and removed the firmware upgrade from their website. Frown

Anyone have a link to an updated firmware?

You can also flash it to openWrt but i have no idea how to do that.

Second this one. I used this one all over Europe last year to remote into another one I had setup running wireguard at my house. Some places I had to clone the MAC of my phone once I logged in with it but after that it was pretty flawless. it also seemed to work fine all day on my portable battery

They update the firmware so often. Really a well supported device. Works with many VPN services like wire guard and setup is through a built in interface.
