you are partially correct. It depends on whether or not you need VPN and the login protocol of the cruise line internet. The one I posted works with all protocols including EAP. Even the more expensive ones sometimes dont have EAP. I had the slate model but upgraded first to the Beryl AX model, since on paper that seemed better. But actually using it tells you what the issues were. The Beryl AX didnt have EAP, only worked with an older version of software (with bugs) and it ran hot. Had issues connecting to my VPN and couldnt get VPN to work reliably. So even though it was newer and more expensive and better on paper, it had fewer capabilities, I finally ended up with hte version I posted, had EAP, ran on a more updated firmware, was power efficient and never got hot and was fast enough. It paid for itself many times over on the cruise. (Saved me 2 people x $15/day x 16 days) = $480.) It was worth it spending $90 for certainty vs $20 uncertainty prior to the trip. Yes it was 4x the cost of the $20 model, but if it didnt work, it would have cost me a lot more than the additional money
BTW, I see posts all the time of people that claim model X is better based on specs, but actually never tried it. Wish they would put disclaimers and not be so certain of their claims. (Not talking about your post). Most important for a travel router to me is useability.
These are older obsolete versions. For me, they arent worth the bother despite the low cost. IF you want a travel router, I highly recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/GL-iNet-GL...R2PX&psc=1
I used it on a recent cruise with it plugged into an Anker phone battery and it worked as a hotspot all over the ship for my family. Worked perfectly. Also used it in VPN mode to connect back to my home network and while slow, worked OK. (It was slow because the ship internet speed was slow. )
Are the ones listed in OP's post not capable of accomplishing the same thing as the model you listed for say a cruise? I figure the bottleneck for cruises will be always be the internet speed anyway so the 433 wireless AC is almost overkill already but not 4x the cost of your model
yea pretty new to these. My phone can use as a wifi hotspot...why do i need this?
If you don't know then don't bother imo.. look it up and you will see the benefits. Slickdeals is and has been a site to host deals on products, not give you a play by play if it works for you. Do your own research, find if it fits your needs, then ask the minor questions here. The people here answering are just trying to be helpful but have no obligation to do so. So, in minimal terms this is not a research site, it is for deals. You decide if that deal is for you or not.
If your hotspot works for you, you don't need this.
Grabbed the Beryl a few days ago for $19, I must have just caught the price drop as I had been checking it daily and it was at $30.90.
Had the Beryl AX and it was nice but overkill for my use and price so I returned it.
Main use is tethering from the phone and occasional travel. Also as an AP for my 5g modem kit with X65 modem set up as Dual Wan on my Flint 2 router so I can do speedtests without unplugging my main ISP everytime, and connecting an outside TV.
Not sure how EAPs work, but thought I read you can just sign in with a phone then clone the MAC to the Beryl and use it on the network.

Wanted a beryl, but was too late so I got an opal, but after doing some research I ended up getting a slate and will probably return the opal. The slate has microsd card and supports openwrt 05.23, and opal seems like it isn't as well supported.
I'm reading and it seems like easy tether pro needs openwrt in order to work as well ?
Shouldn't need easy tether. Just add a couple firewall rules to change TTL on the router.
Can also use the free Netshare app if your phone has No hotspot capability.
I have read the Opal caps at around 120Mbps on usb tether and it only has USB 2.0.

Are there any slick deals on cruises? I'm going to need to book one after I get this router.
ncl usually has last minute deals (1week b4 sail) if there are lots of cabins unsold.
search ncl website for current month and sort by price.
rinse/repeat weekly.
last year alaska season was a bargain in may, june and sept (kids still in school)
I've been wanting something like this for occasional work travel, mostly for hotels that limit the number of wifi devices, charge for wifi devices or offer paid wifi but free ethernet in-room, or have captive portals that don't play nice with AndroidTV/GoogleTV. I'll also likely run tailscale to get back to my Plex server since my ISP forces Plex Redirect and limits to 1mbps when using native Plex remote access.
It was mentioned previously that there isn't a Tailscale package for these, but it looks like there is for the GL-AR750S-Ext (Slate) and a pretty easy-to-follow installation guide:
Going on a cruise in june and was considering one of these, but not sure if i need it or not.
I have a pixel phone that can turn a wifi signal into wifi hotspot. The wifi hotspot doesn't count towards the mobile hotspot data since it's wifi, so it's basically an unlimited wifi hotspot. Is there any benefit to getting one of these travel routers vs just using my phone as a wifi hotspot on the cruise?
This would be the only time i'd need one of these things. Seems like my phone can do everything i'd personally need one of these to do.
Thanks everyone for the good content. I work in IT, decided to tinker with one, and ordered the Slate. I'm going on a cruise this summer so I'll mess around with it at home. Learn the ropes.
