Apple continues to artificially limit non-pro cpus to force an upgrade to pro if you want multiple external displays. I really like my apple products but the fact that non-pro laptops can't support multiple monitors out of the box like a $300 Windows laptop is asinine.

It's shameful that anyone is selling a laptop with only 8GB of non-upgradable RAM these days. Memory requirements only go up over time, life expectancy for most laptops is at least 3-4 years, and 8GB is already too little. Ina couple years anyone who bought only 8GB (especially on a "Pro" device) is going to be hating life.

Hard to justify when the 8GB, 256GB model is on sale for $1000. At this level we aren't doing the super high end stuff so I'd rather pay a bit more for high end or pay a bunch less $1000 for a laptop that is still very awesome

This is a great laptop. It has plenty of power for most use cases. This one comes with a decent amount of RAM and storage. Well worth it over the base config as it will make the laptop last well into the future. The M2 chip is fast and battery life is all day. No fans, thin, light, and decent screen size (and quality).
We spent way more on my wife's last summer (though back to school and edu discount helped). We maxed out RAM and storage because she keeps computers for a long time. Her use cases are basic word processing, excel, lots of browser tabs in multiple browsers to handle several contract jobs with separate web based systems (Outlook and proprietary database type things). She also manages family photo library on this machine and doesn't want to deal with external drives, that's why we went with max storage (she also came from a 2TB 2016 MBP). It handles all these tasks very well. It never seems slow or laggy. The current Macbook Pro was way bulkier and heavier (even the 14" which would have been too small for her). She takes hers with her all the time to different locations, so portability was important. The battery life is a big bonus as well. She doesn't even pack a charger anymore. We are a Mac family so Windows laptops were out of the question. Her Mac just works and that's important to her (and me as I need to provide support).

Good price. Announcement on the M3 spec bump just a few weeks away so retailers now clearing out old stock. Still, very hard to get a 16/1tb config in any new mac at this price unless going the refurb route.
Announcement made by who?

Meh, I'd rather my $1,500 laptop be able to actively cool itself.

careful, pierce the Apple Reality Distortion Field (tm) and you're liable to get downvoted into oblivion (see my first post).

I know you were just being snarky, and didn't really want an explanation, but here's some information anyway: https://developer.apple.com/libra...m_Mgmt.pdf
To paraphrase Arthur C. Clarke, any sufficiently advanced technology looks like Magic to the underdeveloped intellect!

People like this are no different from the engineers at RIM who were so shocked by Steve Jobs' iPhone keynote that they insisted for days that the iPhone was not real because they couldn't believe what Apple had done was even possible! https://www.engadget.com/2013-12-...-we-h.html

basically they use linux/unix over windows gotcha.
install linux on any windows computer to instantly make it faster than macbooks with similar specs.

But does it come with an identifiable logo that projects my economic status?

Gee, I wonder why others didn't think of that. 🤔
If 'someone' is so ignorant that they are unaware that 'linux/unix' is a whole operating system by itself, and does not run 'over' Windows, they are beyond help. Added 'someone' to my 'ignore' list! 👋🏼

I just got a MacBook pro M1 pro 16 gb 1 TB Refurb but it was refurb b/c it was in a dented box that was switched out, laptop itself was brand new. 0 charge cycles and went for $1,480. Glad about this purchase. Had the 2020 MBA Intel 8 gb RAM/256 gb and it was chugging along. Final Cut Pro would just shut down and it would overheat so fast. Never getting an MBA again.

That's unfortunate. The newer MacBook Pros have much better cooling, and their chips are more efficient. But, if you do that much work in FCP, a Mac Mini may be more appropriate for you. Even with adding a monitor, the total cost would be comparable to a MacBook Pro.

I am mostly Windows for work. But I use an air for travel and now I see I can run Windows 11 on the air easily in a VM. I used to have multiple monitors for my windows setup. They are less efficient. Much better is my curved 38 inch monitor. One contious piece of glass rather than 2 or more dorky monitors. I slice the screen into three vertical windows. Much better than multiple monitors for workflow.
