Apple continues to artificially limit non-pro cpus to force an upgrade to pro if you want multiple external displays. I really like my apple products but the fact that non-pro laptops can't support multiple monitors out of the box like a $300 Windows laptop is asinine.

It's shameful that anyone is selling a laptop with only 8GB of non-upgradable RAM these days. Memory requirements only go up over time, life expectancy for most laptops is at least 3-4 years, and 8GB is already too little. Ina couple years anyone who bought only 8GB (especially on a "Pro" device) is going to be hating life.

Hard to justify when the 8GB, 256GB model is on sale for $1000. At this level we aren't doing the super high end stuff so I'd rather pay a bit more for high end or pay a bunch less $1000 for a laptop that is still very awesome

I know you were just being snarky, and didn't really want an explanation, but here's some information anyway: https://developer.apple.com/libra...m_Mgmt.pdf
To paraphrase Arthur C. Clarke, any sufficiently advanced technology looks like Magic to the underdeveloped intellect!

People like this are no different from the engineers at RIM who were so shocked by Steve Jobs' iPhone keynote that they insisted for days that the iPhone was not real because they couldn't believe what Apple had done was even possible! https://www.engadget.com/2013-12-...-we-h.html
I don't want to read a 80 page document of memory management. Of course MacOS has memory management, so does Windows and any other OS.
Just tell us why MacOS apps use less RAM than Windows apps.

Good point if you're talking about performance. However I believe people forget the original purpose of the MacBook Air was to be as thin and light as possible. If you're looking for form factor over specs, but still want to beef up the performance as much as possible, this is a decent deal. Sure you can pay a bit more for MBP but you're getting a smaller screen on a thicker and heavier machine.

Either way I'd be tempted to wait for the M3 version unless the need is urgent. The base M3 is quite a healthy upgrade over the M2.
That logic only works for the Air 13. The Air 15 is only .1 lb lighter than the Pro 14. It isn't a light machine at all. Thin? Sure, but I've never understood the people who like "some heft" to their electronics. If I'm buying a portable device I want as little weight on my shoulders or in my pocket as possible.

It's fine for most things, especially when the alternative is being stuck with one external monitor.

At this price, shouldn't require the use of stupid adapter dongles with sporadic performance glitches. no way

That's unfortunate. The newer MacBook Pros have much better cooling, and their chips are more efficient. But, if you do that much work in FCP, a Mac Mini may be more appropriate for you. Even with adding a monitor, the total cost would be comparable to a MacBook Pro.
As in the M-line have better cooling or newer than M1? I know the Intel MBA's had terrible cooling, and some speculated it was intentional to throttle them to get people to buy MBPs. We wanted something portable, we aren't using FCP for professional-grade stuff. I think the Intel MBA might've shut down b/c the 256 gb was too small. We're using double that in the MBP right now, glad we got the 1 TB and not 512 GB.

This is a good long-term review of the 15" MacBook Air that just came out 2 days ago.

I can't wrap my head around all this. I haven't gotten a MacBook in a decade. When did all these specs just become so complicated. I absolutely hate it. The prices are all pretty high and I need to do a deep dive to figure out the difference between m1/2/3, when m4 will likely release, and then there's a normal/pro/max version 😂

Huh? Dell Inspiron 15 5505 - $950 on Amazon - supports up to three displays at once, one Ultra HD 4K and two Full HD displays
Do you generally try to pay 2x price for any product?

Go to Dell site, you can see Inspiron 15 starting at $329 with a 15% CB from pop site on top of it.

How are these prices a "deal" when you can elsewhere get a Zen 4 w/ 32GB RAM, 2TB storage & 120+Hz OLED screen. Apple tax, LOL.
Vastly better screen, battery life, no throttling when not plugged in, Mac OS, better keyboard, better touchpad, better speakers, lighter and better form factor.

They are different machines and appeal to different people.

No question about it. These guys compare things thatg are not comparable. Some of those OLEDs have dreadful battery life and heat. I think the Zenbook is one of the better ones.

We were talking about the laptops that can support multiple 4K monitors. You said a $400 PC could. I just showed you that it cannot. I asked for link to these 'magical' laptops. None of you provided that.

Why do people like you even come to Mac threads? Does it make you feel better to shit on some product and proselytize for an alternative platform? Get some help.
