Moreover, Apple's customer service isn't what it used to be. In the past, they would work with customer to find a cost effective solution even if the item was past warranty. Now, they seem to be more interested in upselling- based on two Genius Bar experiences since last summer, one for daughters AirPods and other for aforementioned pencil 2. Both times advice was to buy new. Anyway, I will end my rant here because this is certainly a good discount compared to regular retail IF someone wants the features exclusive to this model AND can ensure device is charged regularly.
We are happy with our alternative (with which this message was "scribbled" on the iPad) that offers better charging (usb-c AND wireless through iPad Pro) without pressure sensitivity of pencil 2.
Just my $0.02. Good luck.

Needless to say she decided to buy an alternative that cost her less than Apples so called battery service, has both wireless charging through iPad and usb-c charging and mimics pressure sensitivity well enough for her needs by offering similar capability using tilt.
Having said that this price is definitely great for people that NEED the features exclusive to pencil 2 but just wanted to share there are viable alternatives, especially since what has set Apple apart in the past (customer service, IMHO) seems to have changed more recently.
And yes, I am quite familiar with golden days of "One infinite loop" from past first hand experience in Bay Area or friends/family members still working there.

I believe this is the alternative she purchased mostly due to the extended return window offered by Amazon during holiday season through Jan 31: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CD7P1BTL
However there are definitely alternatives with even same exact functionality just different branding on other retailers like Aliexpress or even temu. Here's a relatively unbiased review of some alternatives: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcEPYzI
Even Quinn from Snazzy labs seemed to be impressed by the functionality of the alternative he got from Temu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uja3Dwx
