Yeah, you'll find how people who understand how to safely maintain data with backups are happy to ride out the (generally long) life left on these used enterprise drives for the significant discount.

Then you'll also find the people who have no understanding of how to protect data, or the bathtub curve of failure, getting thumbs down for their "warnings"

Let the "Seagate Sucks vs Western Digital Sucks" wars begin. I've been using several of these recertified data center drives from both manufacturers for years without any problems whatsoever but remember on a long enough timeline every drive will eventually fail. Just remember if you're storing critical data on any drive it would behoove you to practice redundancy and back it up elsewhere as well.

The thing is, drive failure increases significantly after 5 years (hence the bathtub). Can these be used to back up audio and Video? I want to use a NAS and store my 4k and blu ray videos and music collection. Are they to slow to play back 4k through a home network?

If you can stream 4k on your network, you can definitely play back 4k from your NAS.

So if I buy 3 of these to upgrade my 6 TB NAS (4x 2TB drives) - does that mean I need another 3? as a backup? How does everyone typically do this? I would run 3x 12TB as RAIDZ1 which gives me 24TB. I've got 2x portable USB 5TB Drives and the 4x 2 TB drives = 16GB. How do I handle backing everything up?

Or do I just not backup my Plex library and only backup irreplaceable stuff like photos and documents (which are also in the cloud).
