Japan and the US have the some power outlets. It's just the warranty in this case.

it will work but it won't have a warranty in the US. nintendo will still fix your joy-cons for free even if you don't have a warranty, though

The Japanese model wifi issue will depend on your specific wireless settings for 5ghz. Basically your home wifi router broadcasts 5ghz on different "channels" depending which channels your neighbor is using. In Japan, the number of channels a 5ghz wifi router can choose from to broadcast on is around 50. In U.S. it is around 200. So if your home router is broadcasting on a channel that is not available in Japan then your switch won't work with your home router. So your option is 1. Force your router to broadcast on a compatible channel or 2. Mod your switch so you can change the wireless region from Japan to U.S. 3. Connect over 2.4ghz network instead of 5ghz network

For most people this will be a non issue, but it absolutely is a possible issue.

There are issues with the Japanese version being used in the US with some WiFi configurations and the power adapter. Also no Warrenty or support if there are future issues. Not a good buy if you can hold off for the switch 2.
Switch 2 that's rumored to come out in 13 months and cost $400-$450?

I have and love the Switch. OLED or not, I picked up an ASUS ROG regular Z1 at BB for 340+ tax as open box excellent and looked brand new to me.

That thing blows the switch out of the water in this price range IMO. So many options and PC games are dirt cheap compared. Trust me, I love the Switch, but it has no right at this point to be selling anywhere near the price of a base Steam Deck or ROG Ally IMO. Yeah, the Nintendo exclusives are great, but at the same time, there are plenty of other amazing games across various platforms to play without the Nintendo tax.

For reference I have an XBox series X and S and Switch along with a mini PC Ryzen 7 with a 2TB m.2 drive full of 7K+ (no dups) Retro games that run great. Plays all the way up to Switch games with no problem at hi-res. PS3 no issue eirher.

So yeah, I guess it comes down to use case scenario or bang for the buck. At this point I'm going with Steam or ASUS as a portable going forward.

Weird, I just read that someone already confirmed that it won't release till 2025. Maybe you're confused with ps5 pro that still has a chance of coming out this year.
2025 is going to be the switch 2 release date, lets hope nintendo finally moves on from 1080p by then lol

It can definitely be an issue. My router is set to use channels 150+ (for optimal connection), so my switch doesn't work with that setup. I have temporarily set my router's channel to around 40 and set up my switch's connection for that and changed it back, and it maintains the connection.. but it's still not as optimal as a channel that's 150+. I ended up using mobile hotspot on my phone whenever I want to use my switch online and that works fine for me.

For other people though.. I would suggest paying a bit more and getting a US switch. That way you'll have a warranty and won't have to deal with the wifi bs if it becomes an issue. The wifi chip on the switch is already garbage, you don't want the channel to be restricted to 52 or lower. The only reason I put up with it is cuz I got a splatoon OLED model for $240. That was worth it to me. A mario edition at this price wouldn't be, it's not as cool looking and the price is a bit too high for a Japanese model.

I bought a Japanese model about a year ago and I've had zero issues. The only thing different is there's some Japanese writing on the retail box. You wouldn't notice it unless you're looking for it.

For those pitching a more powerful handheld, see if this person's experience resonates:

Steam Deck: Was it Worth it? | One Year Later

TLDR; he's happy he bought it, but he never uses it... he plays lightweight and portable games on his Switch and he plays hefty titles on his PS5 and PC, with very little cause to heavy game on the go for 40 minutes or so.

Japan is 100 V while USA is 120 V.
This virtually never matters for modern electronics that are rectifying AC to DC (anything with a "wall wart"). Most will work between 100V and 240V. Even full size ATX power supplies. And it says exactly that on the bottom of the japanese switch PSU.

It isn't really sensible to manufacture a 100V power supply for the japanese market and a separate 110-120V sku for US/Canada/etc. Most off the shelf components are already rated for that range anyway. So they're almost always internally identical.

Something with a big resistive load, like a toaster oven, is a different story.
