Heretic vs Magni+ tl:dr:
The Magni+ uses a discrete hardware design (using individual analog components) while the Heretic uses op-amp chips instead (components are integrated into a single chip), typically allowing the Heretic to have lower noise and a cleaner signal.

Quick primer on audio: The audio in all our digital devices is in digital form (bits of 1 and 0). This needs to be converted into analog form (waves) using a device called DAC or Digital to Analog converter. Then the analog signal needs to be amplified to power the sound producing devices such as headphones or speakers using another device called Amplifier or AMP. This device belongs to this class, but it can only power headphones and not speakers.
Coming to whether you need this:
You need this only if you have "wired" high end headphones or earphones. I would not worry about this for the likes of most consumer grade headphones such as Bose wired.
Also remember "wired". if you have anything wireless / bluetooth, the DAC and AMP is built into them and you don't need this. Rather you cannot use this at all.
If you have headphones from the likes of Sennheiser, Grado, Audio Technica, Beyerdynaminc, even some higher end Sonys, then you can get real benefits from this.
I will never buy Schiit again. Worst customer service I have ever dealt with. Rude and condescending. I had to spend $60 to get my under warranty $400 amp fixed after arguing. I sold it immediately after. I just don't get the hype around them. I respect American made but crappy service is a no go for me.
Go for the iFi stuff. Sounds better with better engineering.
These are Schiit.
