Heretic vs Magni+ tl:dr:
- The Magni+ uses a discrete hardware design (using individual analog components) while the Heretic uses op-amp chips instead (components are integrated into a single chip), typically allowing the Heretic to have lower noise and a cleaner signal.

Coming to whether you need this:
You need this only if you have "wired" high end headphones or earphones. I would not worry about this for the likes of most consumer grade headphones such as Bose wired.
Also remember "wired". if you have anything wireless / bluetooth, the DAC and AMP is built into them and you don't need this. Rather you cannot use this at all.
If you have headphones from the likes of Sennheiser, Grado, Audio Technica, Beyerdynaminc, even some higher end Sonys, then you can get real benefits from this.
Go for the iFi stuff. Sounds better with better engineering.
