About this Book:
  • For twelve thousand years the Galactic Empire has ruled supreme. Now it is dying. But only Hari Seldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, can see into the future—to a dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare that will last thirty thousand years. To preserve knowledge and save humankind, Seldon gathers the best minds in the Empire—both scientists and scholars—and brings them to a bleak planet at the edge of the galaxy to serve as a beacon of hope for future generations. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation.

This story inspired Star Trek, Star Wars, Ender's Game, and more. It's worth the read, but remember, early sci fi isn't as polished as the three titles I mentioned. Also remember, these were compiled from serials Asimov wrote for magazines and stitched together. So it's a bit janky at times with story cuts.

It's about space Nazis/roman-empire and a dude who can use math to predict the future who tries to build a new society.

Did the audiobook after watching the first season on Apple TV. It was a slog. Overrated.

Edit: lol not allowed to have an opinion

The second season is much better. First was a disaster

Asimov's stories and ideas were great, but his prose was not. I like to watch his stories on tv and movies, but reading them... not so much.

I guess I'll disagree with some of the comments by saying I thought this book was very good. Although from a deal perspective you could just go to practically any library and check it out from their electronic portal. The follow on books weren't nearly as good as the first in my opinion.

I read most of this when I was a teen and gave up when I didn't see the point. Lack of boob pictures probably didn't help.

Loved the original/first 3 books. Some of my favs of all time.

Not a fan of Goyer's works, so unsurprisingly the Apple TV show... isn't for me.

Asimov's ideas are great, his characters and prose aren't as good. Still, there's a reason he is considered one of the greatest writers in the genre. Haven't ever seen the show and probably won't bother, but if you like older "golden age" sci-fi you will probably enjoy the Foundation books.

Libraries also have this and others in the series on audiobook. Can be a waiting period though.

Archive.org has an Asimov audiobook collection I stumbled on recently. The VLC media player app is helpful to play various audio file formats.

I think he's comparing the TV series, which he liked, to the book, which he didn't.
They really have only the title in common.

Princess of Mars is one of my favorites. Writen 50 years before Foundation. So damn good. Hard to say who inspired what but a lot was copied directly from Foundation.

I read several of the Foundation books years ago. It's a great concept and overall story but definitely can get pretty dry at points.
