I usually buy several of these and then keep the one in the best condition and best battery life. Has worked out well. Usually about 1 in 3 are in great condition.
Yes, my sister got screwed over by an Amazon third-party refurb iPhone. The battery stopped charging after a couple months and the Apple Store wouldn't work on it because it didn't have a valid serial or something like that. Amazon support was useless. I think she got some credit back eventually, but not a full refund, and she bought one somewhere else. I'd stay away.
A common issue with 13s are the dust getting into 3x lens. Switch to 3x lens and see if there are any black spots seem. I returned 3 amazon renewed 13s simply because this defects. It is a common issue for 13s and the only fix is to replace the whole camera module.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB - Unlocked (Renewed Premium) = $550
Renewed Premium = battery 90%+ and full 1 year return/replace/refund
(excellent = 80%+ battery and 90 day window)

Sold and shipped by Amazon

Refurbs that aren't issued by Apple have to be a total minefield right

As it's two years old I'd type this: my battery life was about 2% away from replacement so the apple store folks acted like I'd have to come back in a few months before applecare replacement. I went on the monthly plan. THat's pretty good though for (obviously) daily usage.

I feel you'd quickly know just from looking at the phone if it's not worth it or not. I do hope though I don't need to think about replacement for a good 3 more years

This is why you buy refurbs that are SHIPPED and SOLD by Amazon, not a 3rd party that's selling through Amazon.

Not everyone cares about that.

An extra $60 gets you a year newer phone with a battery that will be good for at least a year along with a 1 year return window for a full refund.

If you want to keep the phone for the next 2-3 years, sure. If you want to upgrade and have an in between phone for free until the next model comes out... the answer is obvious.
You know that iPhone 14 has the same processor has iPhone 13 Pro? 13 pro has 120hz display, triple camera setup and better build quality. It also supports physical SIM cards. iPhone 14 was a total shit show when it was launched and it still is.

correct, some care only about release year and not actual capability differences…and they are wrong

iPhone 13 Pro seems superior in every aspect to the 14. On the plus side, it doesn't look like something I'd give my kid

Does this one have USBC? I am getting older and am thinking it's time to go to something easy like an Iphone these days but don't want to invest into lightning cable items. Everything I have now is usbc.

This is what i got from talking to the vendor: the phones could have replacement parts, and you will be able to tell that in your setting-hence not tradein eligible with apple. The phones might be repaired with new screens/batteries/camera module. I got one last week and the camera was completely f'ed up. Third party parts and not able to focus. The return window is good.
