I feel you'd quickly know just from looking at the phone if it's not worth it or not. I do hope though I don't need to think about replacement for a good 3 more years

If you want to keep the phone for the next 2-3 years, sure. If you want to upgrade and have an in between phone for free until the next model comes out... the answer is obvious.
