Most people usually start with a Crosley or whatever junk they are pushing at local stores, avoid those. The cheapest ok-ish player is probably Audio Technica's LP60 at around $150, but even then it is bare bones and feels like a penny pincer. IMO, the current budget king is the Fluance RT81+ for $300. It cost twice as much but everything is basically better: acrylic platter, gold plated RCA jacks, better tonearm, better cartridge, etc...

If you don't need one quick it might be worth hunting the sites for a refurbished one. I just picked up an Audio Technica refurbished LP3BX in white for $99 with free shipping from Beach Camera, works great using the Edifier 1380DB I just got.
Other site to checkout are Adorama, B&H Photo, Crutchfield, Best Buy, and Monoprice. Just don't get Crossley as they've been known to scratch records

I recommend looking at thrift and second hand stores for a vintage 70s unit. Picked up a Sony direct drive unit for $20 a few years back and see decent units from time to time. Mine was from Goodwill. Test the units in store of course if you can to make sure they function.

I picked up 5 classic units from Goodwill over the past 10 years and refurbished them and gave them to friends. Some have beautiful wood plinths.
