I haven't finished Like a Dragon: Gaiden yet and I am waiting for the price to drop on Steam (I don't have a console these days)

It's more like many of us have massive backlogs of great games we haven't played because we don't have time. $40 for 'a lot of game' doesn't mean much to me these days when I have terabytes of games that I can still play while waiting for this to drop like pretty much every new release. I'm not paying $70 for games.

That's what they don't tell you about adulting. Get that fancy job with that nice salary so you can afford everything you want but then you have no time to enjoy any of it outside of 15-30 min spurts lol.
+1 so much truth, wish I can play games like the old days 😢

I have only ever played Judgment and really enjoyed it. How is this, in comparison?

Great to see on sale so soon after release. Just finished Man Who Erased His Name and had a $50 Amazon GC anyways, so perfect timing!

Entirely different. It's much better than Judgement. I enjoyed the Judgement games, but they are the weaker games in the Yakuza universe. This is the direct sequel to Yakuza: Like a Dragon. They changed the name of the Yakuza series after that, to Like a Dragon. This, and the game before it, are turn-based RPGs.

The rest of the Yakuza games are beat-em-ups, just like Judgement. You need to play Yakuza: Like a Dragon before this, otherwise you'll miss a ton.

You should actually also play Like a Dragon: Gaiden before this. It's a beat-em-up one that shows what one of the characters was off doing on his own, during the events of the first Like a Dragon. You'll actually be pretty lost with a good chunk of the story and it will make this one far less meaningful if you don't play Like a Dragon: Gaiden.

Good price but got a back log to deal with. I can hold out until it's $20 on Steam Deck or it makes it to games pass. I held out for Tales of Arise and Dead Island 2 and it paid off.

Great price! Just finished it. Great JRPG, even better than the previous one.
Do you need to play the previous games to understand the story? If so, which game should I start with?

this game has 2 key characters, ichiban and kiryu

ichiban's story starts from yakuza like a dragon, which is part 8 in this series (this game is part 9)

kiry's story starts from yakuza 0, the first in the series

i spent several months in 2022 going through the entire series from the start, and i can honestly say the whole series holds up well, and kiryu is one of the most well made fictional characters i've seen, worth going through the whole series for the stellar writing in each part

but if you don't want to play the whole series, at least start from like a dragon
