I own the standard, non-AX version and have used it extensively in my travels domestically and globally. There's a walkthrough published by gli on this exact topic here: https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/e...ve_portal/

This is also great for cruises where they base your cost on per device. Hook this up first and tie to your account and then connect all your devices to the gl to save. Granted this only works when in your room, but definitely helps for those cruise line that charge per device.

With amazon business account, there is an additional $31 promotional certificate that can be clipped which brings the original $82.90 down by extra $31 and total price comes to about $51.90

How does this work in a hotel where you have to log in through a captive portal to activate wifi for your hotel?

Yes it does. It's a huge convenience to have it with you, if you are traveling with family or multiple devices.

If I were trying to do this with an other router I have lying around (saying using openwrt), is it pain to set all this up through that route?

I actually found out about GLI because I was trying to do something similar, and have open wrt installed onto a spare router that I had lying around. Technically, you should be able to get it to do what you need it to do if you get openwrt installed on there, but I can't speak on it from first-hand experience.

You connect your spare phone to wifi and share internet as USB hotspot to the router.
You do not need to do that. If you follow the documentation, when you connect your first device to the router it will connect and register with the portal. After that you can connect as many devices as you want. I also use tailscale onto it to tunnel back to my network for "VPN". I'm working on cloudflare but GL uses very old openwrt so it is difficult to get up to date packages. For instance you just cant update tailscale like I can from my DIY openwrt router which is a shame.

good price. heads up that some fraction of buyers receive problematic units. So buying from Amazon is a good idea because of their return policy, just make sure you run through the paces in the first 30 days. I got one direct from Glinet and it was not stable, had outdated firmware and I had to return it on my nickel.

On the other hand, I have used several generations of glinet and the others worked well. (Mango, Slate, slate plus)

I've used this in hotels with a splash page as well on a United WiFi flight. Just open the GLI app and connect to it with your device. Follow the steps to connect as a repeater (use cases above) and then it will pass through to the WiFi login page.

It was very easy but I work in IT and understand the different options more than the common person.

Is this worth the extra cost? I got the regular Beryl MT-1300 for $20.

If I connect my phone to this via USB-B, the carrier will consider the data used as hotspot correct? The reason I ask is that my carrier has a cap on hotspot but not for the device. Any way around it?
