I own the standard, non-AX version and have used it extensively in my travels domestically and globally. There's a walkthrough published by gli on this exact topic here: https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/e...ve_portal/

This is also great for cruises where they base your cost on per device. Hook this up first and tie to your account and then connect all your devices to the gl to save. Granted this only works when in your room, but definitely helps for those cruise line that charge per device.

With amazon business account, there is an additional $31 promotional certificate that can be clipped which brings the original $82.90 down by extra $31 and total price comes to about $51.90

Can someone share a guide on how people use routers like this to work abroad while VPNing to the States? I've been googling but don't seem to know the search term to reach a straightforward guid.

Been trying to figure out which of GL.iNet routers are best for this, or if this router works well.

Is this worth the extra cost? I got the regular Beryl MT-1300 for $20.
Where can you get Beryl MT-1300 for $20?

If I were trying to do this with an other router I have lying around (saying using openwrt), is it pain to set all this up through that route?
Yes. I tried doing something similar with a Raspberry Pi and Openwrt and a few tutorials I found online. It is possible but the inet routers have a much simpler interface and more. Likelihood it will work while traveling. I wouldn't bring my rpi4 and expect it to work as easily as the inet routers.

Not seeing any coupons on my Amazon Business account, so YMMV. The $31 coupon only shows on my personal account.

Is there any risk or downside to converting an Amazon acct to business acct?

FYI - Openwrt-19.07.3 Easytether works on this using the mt7622 driver

I just got the MT1300 as well, the MT3000 for 4X the price I don't think so. I'm able to test over 100mbit on wireguard with the mt1300 which for hotels is as good as I expect. Using at an Airbnb or something maybe I could see wanting the extra power.

Also it's been about this same price at Walmart (within a dollar) for a few weeks and was a couple more than that at Amazon. Not saying this isn't a deal but very minimally further discounted than it's been all month.

Looks like mt3000 is also using the older openwrt too. edit: there's also no microsd slot on the mt3000 either which is def. a nice to have to share media to your devices over samba or whatever.

I got two $20 MT1300 and a MT3000 as well, wireguard is doing 100Mb Vs 300Mb/s for MT3000, I would say 100Mb is pretty enough for travel use but if you have use cases for faster speed or snappier UI, it is worth the extra 31$ for MT3000, at least for me because I got both

Agreed with you, I got the two MT1300 at 20$ as well but still went for this deal, $51 is a good price for MT3000.

This was $84.90 a few days ago when I bought it - so this is a good deal, but it's not the huge savings it would appear to be - since Amazon hasn't been selling it anywhere close to $119

If I connect my phone to this via USB-B, the carrier will consider the data used as hotspot correct? The reason I ask is that my carrier has a cap on hotspot but not for the device. Any way around it?
Yes - you use this in conjunction with the app Easytether. Android only, if you have an IPhone then you're paying the Apple tax.

I have this model. Been to hotel where they only limit 2 devices while we travel with a minimum of 6 including my laptop. The router allows me to connect all of my device through it. Also, it has an option to use their vpn or your own vpn to prevent people from stealing your info. I had experienced where people use the hotel wifi to snoop and steal my CC. This is a must for those who travels

Check out the Slate AX instead--it's only slightly bigger and supports EAP.
