I own the standard, non-AX version and have used it extensively in my travels domestically and globally. There's a walkthrough published by gli on this exact topic here: https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/e...ve_portal/

This is also great for cruises where they base your cost on per device. Hook this up first and tie to your account and then connect all your devices to the gl to save. Granted this only works when in your room, but definitely helps for those cruise line that charge per device.

With amazon business account, there is an additional $31 promotional certificate that can be clipped which brings the original $82.90 down by extra $31 and total price comes to about $51.90

How does this work in a hotel where you have to log in through a captive portal to activate wifi for your hotel?

If I connect my phone to this via USB-B, the carrier will consider the data used as hotspot correct? The reason I ask is that my carrier has a cap on hotspot but not for the device. Any way around it?
Newer Android phones(has to support multiband WiFi) will use whatever WLAN network it's connected to as a default for their HotSpot. Tried it out on my backup Pixel 6a while I was staying at a hotel last year and all the devices worked without a fuss. Give it a go if you have a retired old phone; no need for specialized travel routers anymore

What's the price of the MT1300 you see before the $31 coupon? I see $107.90 minus the $31.... don't see the extra discount??? TIA.

Check out the Slate AX instead--it's only slightly bigger and supports EAP.
I have heard that EAP is coming to the Beryl. That said, the problem with the slate AX is the non-standard power requirements. 5V, 4A. 5V,3A is the PD standard. So you must use their power supply and it may not work on a battery pack which adheres to the PD standard.

Picked one up a while ago. Highly recommended if you travel a bit and have more devices than wifi allocations for your room. Really enjoyed using it to set up a hotspot with a network wide VPN after cloning my MAC address.

$82.90 was what it was initially. It must have been adjusted after a few hours I would think

Yes - you use this in conjunction with the app Easytether. Android only, if you have an IPhone then you're paying the Apple tax.
A simple TTL firewall rule added to the router is all that is needed for Android, no need for easytether or any other phone app.

This seems pretty slick, but the MT-1300 seems like a better deal if you can find it on sale like it was recently.
It is doubtful you will have 2.5GBe in a hotel or most anywhere you travel for a long, long time, so having an extra ethernet port on the MT-1300 is a better deal for most. 2.5GBe is mostly only useful at home and for that a full size home router would be the answer. You can turn the WAN port to a LAN port for more wired connections and that would have allowed you to have 2.5GB connections to the other wired device(s), but the dedicated LAN port is only 1GBe. So the 1GBe WAN and 2x 1GBe LAN on the MT-1300 look better in comparison (and yes you can convert the WAN port to LAN if you would like).

Faster wifi would be alright, I haven't compared the MT-1300's speed to this one, but I am guessing the MT-1300 isn't much slower and probably faster than the connections you are likely to run into while traveling.

The Beryl is an 8 watt device at most on its own, 3A is only needed for accessories, like USB hard drives. I am going to guess that the 4A on the Slate AX is similar. It probably is a little more power hungry than the Beryl, but not by too much.

You need to modify the TTL setting to mask hotspot usage. Have to do that from Luci firewall custom tab

I see it to be $109.9, probably you might have purchased earlier and it is not showing up extra $31 to apply.

Can someone share a guide on how people use routers like this to work abroad while VPNing to the States? I've been googling but don't seem to know the search term to reach a straightforward guid.

Been trying to figure out which of GL.iNet routers are best for this, or if this router works well.
I use NordVPN with these routers and they work great. Here they have instructions on setting it up with their service. Others will have the same for their VPN connections. https://support.nordvpn.com/hc/en...th-NordVPN

Yes. Slate AX is much more powerful as well - WireGuard 500mbps and even more (I've done 625mbps). However it does run warmer and need a bit more juice as well.

I run both of my Slate AX off battery packs all the time, even cheaper ones. They never have any problem. I will say that the Slate AX is the most power hungry of the travel units, it runs up to about 8 watts or so depending on usage. Compared to previous models and generations, it's definitely more thirsty, and runs hotter. But it also has the highest performance, so that is the trade off.

strange, the base price before coupon on my amazon business account is $107.90, which only brings down to $83.89 after the coupon

Log in via a phone or computer to the hotel, then change the Mac address on the Beryl.
