I own the standard, non-AX version and have used it extensively in my travels domestically and globally. There's a walkthrough published by gli on this exact topic here: https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/e...ve_portal/

This is also great for cruises where they base your cost on per device. Hook this up first and tie to your account and then connect all your devices to the gl to save. Granted this only works when in your room, but definitely helps for those cruise line that charge per device.

I have heard that EAP is coming to the Beryl. That said, the problem with the slate AX is the non-standard power requirements. 5V, 4A. 5V,3A is the PD standard. So you must use their power supply and it may not work on a battery pack which adheres to the PD standard.
Good point. Re-reading the specs on the Slate AX, it doesn't say that it's PD compliant, it just uses the USB C connector. So I suspect that it doesn't go through any of the USB PD handshaking/negotiation and simply draws as much current at 5V that it needs and can get (up to the rated 4A). So, if your battery pack is okay with delivering 4A of current without getting a PD handshake/negotiation, it will work.

Yes. Slate AX is much more powerful as well - WireGuard 500mbps and even more (I've done 625mbps). However it does run warmer and need a bit more juice as well.
True. I bought both and compared them. Right now I am neutral as to which is better. Sure, the Beryl AX is lighter/smaller/newer, but the Slate is faster at multi-core stuff like WireGuard. So far, my Slate AX has not been noticeably louder/hotter, but maybe that will change as I put more software on it.

What's EAP?
Extensible Authentication Protocol. It is used by most universities and WeWork wifi for authentication. Some hotels use it too.

Put simply, there are some places where you couldn't use the current Beryl AX to repeat the wifi signal. It may not matter to you if everywhere you go doesn't require EAP.

Is this worth the extra cost? I got the regular Beryl MT-1300 for $20.
I returned the AX and got an MT1300 for $20. For me the AX was overkill for 4 x price.
Just added and setup a 1GB microsd card to the MT1300 and installed Adguard Home and Tailscale.

Yep. Honestly you can't go wrong with either one. I just wanted the top dog so bought a few AX's and don't regret at all. But the Beryl is fine for most use cases - it's pretty rare someone needs more than 300mbps on WireGuard to be honest. And a lot of people don't require EAP. But again they're both fantastic little routers and you won't be disappointed in either choice.

I'm actually currently using the Opal right now at a hotel in San Diego. Been using it for all my traveling. Only issue I'm seeing with the Opal, since it is the only one I own, is when I connect to a NordVPN, my speed drops dramatically. The hotel I'm currently at has their speeds unrestricted (200/150Mbps) but when I connect to Nord, my speeds goes down to 10/10. For the most part, having the travel router is very helpful since some hotels I've been to limit you to only 2 devices. I have my laptop, phone and a FireTV stick. It's even worse when you can't hotspot because the cellular data is bad in some areas. Basically, these travel routers are great. Thinking of getting this one and giving the Opal to my brother.

I'm so confused by all the different models that GL iNet offers in terms of travel routers

MT3000 (this one)
SFT1200
AXT1800
etc.

what is the difference between all of these? Is there one that is best among them all? How do any of these compare with the Asus RT-AX57 - AX3000 travel router??? Saw some comments where this may need a proprietary charger, but see photos where someone is using a different charger and saw a video saying that a powerbank can be used for situations like on an airplane. Need to get a travel router for the family so I don't have 10+ devices to connect every time we travel and don't want to end up with something that will be obsolete any time soon. Used the RavPower FileHubs, but those are no longer supported by RavPower and the app is now owned by some other affiliate.

Great little travel router! I got the AX (upgrading from the previous Beryl) - I've used this on 2 of our family trips w/ wifi captive portals. Works wonderful. We stayed at a 2-story Chalet/cabin in January up near Yosemite and the wifi coverage was strong.
so why can't you connect to wifi direct with the other devices? This seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

You need to modify the TTL setting to mask hotspot usage. Have to do that from Luci firewall custom tab
Do you know the exact correct entries for Tmobile? Thanks.

Not seeing any coupons on my Amazon Business account, so YMMV. The $31 coupon only shows on my personal account.
Try adding it to the cart and see if the coupon shows up there.

If I want to pair a Metro Android phone with this, and bypass the hotspot restrictions, anybody know the best way to do that? Most of the stuff I find online talks about using EasyTether, which appears to be no longer supported, and some things I find talk about the newer chips in the Beryl not being supported.

You do not need to do that. If you follow the documentation, when you connect your first device to the router it will connect and register with the portal. After that you can connect as many devices as you want. I also use tailscale onto it to tunnel back to my network for "VPN". I'm working on cloudflare but GL uses very old openwrt so it is difficult to get up to date packages. For instance you just cant update tailscale like I can from my DIY openwrt router which is a shame.
I know exactly what you're talking about but the average slickdealer will be confused. This youtuber will explain it better. No offense. https://youtu.be/szqme3j7h10?si=YV3CfqWYvm28Bkss
