I own the standard, non-AX version and have used it extensively in my travels domestically and globally. There's a walkthrough published by gli on this exact topic here: https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/e...ve_portal/

This is also great for cruises where they base your cost on per device. Hook this up first and tie to your account and then connect all your devices to the gl to save. Granted this only works when in your room, but definitely helps for those cruise line that charge per device.

With amazon business account, there is an additional $31 promotional certificate that can be clipped which brings the original $82.90 down by extra $31 and total price comes to about $51.90

Got it at this price + tax with free shipping, good deal! Purchased one with Walmart at $81 a couple of weeks ago and now I am gonna return that.
Appreciate that you do this. I do the same as well. If everyone did this, it will teach retailers not to over charge us. Many consumers know how to comparison shop which is why some are moving to a subscription model by charging people to be in their member's club like Best Buy does. The only members club I think is worth it is Costco.

It's unfortunate the price bloomed up to 78.90 at checkout after the $31 coupon.

I returned the AX and got an MT1300 for $20. For me the AX was overkill for 4 x price.
Just added and setup a 1GB microsd card to the MT1300 and installed Adguard Home and Tailscale.
Where are you finding MT1300?

Very good travel router - coming from someone who tried like dozens of them over the years. If you are looking for one, get this!

Important thing to remember: when dealing with some captive portals, one has to remember to turn off AdGuard, which will prevent connecting successfully.

so why can't you connect to wifi direct with the other devices? This seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
I travel with a minimum of four devices (laptop, phone (personal), phone (work), tablet). With a travel router you can set up the travel router and all of the devices will have already been set up for the travel router so once that is set up they're all connected.

if the person you quoted travels with their family it could be even more devices.

Also some places limit the amount of devices that you can connect with the log in they provide or charge extra for extra connections.

I tried creating a Amazon Business account but it fails because it says the phone number already exists on an account (which it does).

I own 6 LLCs where my phone number is the same on all of them, and a personal account.

Anyone figure out how to get around this?

Good point. Re-reading the specs on the Slate AX, it doesn't say that it's PD compliant, it just uses the USB C connector. So I suspect that it doesn't go through any of the USB PD handshaking/negotiation and simply draws as much current at 5V that it needs and can get (up to the rated 4A). So, if your battery pack is okay with delivering 4A of current without getting a PD handshake/negotiation, it will work.
Dont forget that USB C cables are only rated at 3A. I dont know if it will matter, but may make the power iffy if it goes to 4A.

Bought this at $109 a while back and feel it's worth it. I would be all over this if I was looking for a travel router. Nice find.

I just installed the 4.6 beta firmware and can confirm that this router can now connect to EAP networks so there really isn't a reason for most people to get the Slate AX over this one.

Windscribe works great on mine as well using wireguard conf. My free oracle cloud vm with wireguard is a bit slower.
