Cool, I can fly to San Francisco and get my rental car broken into, and get the "authentic San Francisco experience"!

just for fun, i pulled up the low fare calendar for LAX to SFO during the promo period. this fare is only offered seven (7) days during the promo window. in fairness though, there are a handful of $37 fares so still pretty good.

separately, Southwest is doing another 20% to 30% off sale (excluding intra-California travel which is already covered in this thread):

Splash sale! Up to 30% off base fares*.

*Use promotion code SPLASH from 2/27-2/29/24 for travel on select flights from 3/19-5/22/24. For continental U.S. travel:

- 30% off savings valid for Tuesday/Wednesday travel,
- 25% off savings valid for Monday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday travel, and
- 20% off savings valid for Sunday travel.

Continental U.S. travel blacked out 3/23-3/24, 3/30-3/31, and 4/6-4/7. Intra-California travel excluded. Orange County (SNA) travel excluded. Restrictions and exclusions apply. Seats and days limited. Discount is applied before government taxes and fees.

Also found that the promotion is pretty limited; found some ~$60 roundtrip tickets between Burbank and San Jose though!

Got $20 off each of my flights booked through the last deal. Unfortunately, it looks like the refund is tied to the person flying and not to the person that booked

Yeah, for Southwest, the way it works is if you booked with actual money (whether it be your credit card or a gift card), the refund is tied to the name of the person on the ticket. However, if you book with points, the refund goes back to the original account that had spent the points on the booking.
So for example, if you typically book for yourself and your significant other, then book your own flights with credit card or gift card or flight credit, but book your SO's flights with points if possible.

If u had:

booked the 2nd cheapest fare type, anyone could use the credit.

booked on points, they would have reverted back to your reward account

PS the code has some sale fares in my market, my current pending flight fares are still less. I check often, they all took a healthy bounce over the weekend, now "on sale" lol

Fares between Oakland and San Diego for May are exactly the same as they were when I checked last week before the "sale." Must be extremely limited dates.
