I'm always down for charcoal deals. My question is do you think this is that much superior than the other brands?

I can almost get twice as much with the other brands.

Depends on the brand. I rate it equal with Jealous Devil. Better than Kamado Joe and much much better than Cowboy, B&B.

FWIW- Home Depot also has this at 19.95

I am second guessing this deal. Amazon says this "This pack includes 70% medium-sized pieces that are 2-3 inches in size and 30% small pieces 1 ⅓- 2 inches in size." There is no mention of small pieces on the Home Depot listing.

It's very good charcoal, whether it is worth the premium price is up to you. All really good quality charcoal is almost always going to run you at least $1+/lb., even on sale.

In my opinion, most lump falls into the cheap, adequate, or good quality categories. Personally I'm fine with the "adequate", mid-grade stuff for most cooks (Royal Oak, B&B, etc.,) but I keep some bags of good quality stuff (Kamado Joe, Jealous Devil, Fogo, etc.) around too for important cooks and to try out new brands whenever they go on sale.

This has been the regular price at my local Ace Hardware. In fact I got it for $15 after using their $5 off coupon.

This is good charcoal (superior to Kamado Joe brand). Been using it for several years, I always stock up when it goes on sale.

I recommend trying different brands of charcoal until you find something you like.

I am too. But this isn't a deal. This is literally over a dollar per pound.

Yall need to start remembering just a couple years ago when it was $11.99/20lb for B&B. Those deals still happen too.

People just decided to conveniently forget what a deal is for charcoal. And this ain't it

Sorry, but this isn't even remotely true. Ace several times a year will sell B&B brand, which is considered some of the best, for like 13 bucks for a 20lb bag.

Not to mention there are several other deals each year at other stores on other good brands that dip below a dollar a pound. Bottom line, that's just not true dude. Hell, multiple people in this threat of pointed out that pricing on this supposed deal is literally the regular everyday price.

That means that when it goes on sale, it dips below a dollar a pound. That's just simple math.

I don't know where people keep getting this crap where they insist that you have to pay a dollar a pound or more. You don't , and you shouldn't.

***And please let's stop telling people that you do.***

Look we have different opinions about the overall quality of B&B lump charcoal, but otherwise we are in total agreement here. That isn't a knock on B&B either, I have some and use it quite often. I even said I use what I referred to as the "adequate quality" brands of lump most often and called out B&B in there. Like you, my target purchase price for B&B is also around <.60/lb.

I never said you had to spend $1+ per pound for good lump, I was only saying that the (most often considered) really good quality brands are almost always $1 per pound or more even on sale, that's all. The list of those "really good" brands did not include B&B, sorry. But the ones that I did mention (KJ, JD, Fogo) almost never go on sale below $1/lb., so I gave no misinformation here.

Last Highly TU'd Fogo Deal

Last Highly TU'd KJ Deal

Last Highly TU'd Jealous Devil Deal

We can argue about the quality vs. value proposition of different brands of lump charcoal all day, but like everything else hobby related we all have our own opinions about what we like, what works best for our own use cases, and what is actually worth the money.

Just my 2 cents.
I did a smoked Boston butt about 2 weeks ago on my masterbilt 800 with a bag of fogo and it was probably the best pulled pork I've done on it.
I've tried many B&B variants (standard, hickory, competition, few others) and have usually enjoyed that brand. I've tried mesquite lump from a local chain. I've tried Kingsford. I've tried royal oak. I've tried Cowboy.
Kingsford and cowboy I wasn't particularly fond of.
Royal oak was fine.
Bb was fine.
Fogo in my opinion gave the cleanest flavor, though didn't burn quite as efficiently.
Will be trying ribs/brisket with it next to see if it remains my preferred.
