It's 2024 and planes still go 500mph, does anyone know why they can't build planes that go faster (probably fuel and scheduling tricks). It's crazy to spend a whole day flying to get somewhere. Gas is cheap, they charge arm and leg and stuff passengers in narrow seats like cattle. Make that trip shorter!

You mean like supersonic? Like the Concorde that existed 25 years ago and could average 1300mph? You can read about how that turned out. Many countries don't want supersonic flights passing over and sonic booming the population. There are planes in development that will supercruise and reduce sonic booming, so it is coming back eventually.

Nice deal. But I'd be nervous about flying to Taiwan these days.
Yep, the Chinese are waiting for the moment when you step off the plane, so they can nuke you.

Fuel economy. On longhaul routes, a considerable amount of the fuel loaded is necessary just to carry the weight of the extra fuel needed for the mission.

Other than the boom overture (which won't materialize, especially since they added a third engine to the concept), there's really no part of the sector that is interested in faster speeds. The major carriers all have globally available wifi, so businesses flyers can be productive in the air. That wasn't the case in the Concorde era.

Look for TPAC fares to continue a downward trend this year. More mainland Chinese carriers are restarting US routes in the next few months for the first time since the pandemic. Prior to covid, these carriers were responsible for a lot of discounted capacity that pushed prices lower. The economics of the 787 were responsible for much of that.

Typical airfare in coach is about this price. Good if its business class, but for coach - hard pass.

It takes a lot of fuel and/or powerful engines to break the sound barrier. Most fighter jets have to use afterburner to do it (10x fuel use).

I use Turkish Airlines often and they are good in terms of service (used to be the best but went down after Covid). Best food I ever eaten on a plane tho. Service is free of charge. Their screens also have relatively new movies.

Its more cost effective to fIy to say europe (pick any known country) off season and spend a night or two there and then take some local carrier to Taiwan.

Not but at least they can do a little faster.
Concorde was not thought out well but it may also have been sabotaged, who knows. Don't need to go 1300mph but they are kind a stuck in 500's when they can easily do 700s just below speed of sound. Imagine 3000 mile flight taking only about 4 hrs 15 minutes instead of 6+ hours.

I say sonicboom the corn farmers. Haha.

Concordes were a pretty awesome program though. Just a superficial read of the Wikipedia discusses some really cool challenges they dealt with, like friction heating the surfaces and increased cosmic radiation at higher altitudes.

$850 is cheap to Taiwan, we fly once a year and it's like $2500 for EVA Economy Plus (direct from JFK to Taipei). You really need Economy Plus, I'm 6'2" and my knees touch the seat in front of me in regular economy.

You gotta get a direct flight, makes flying to Asia much less painful.

It's quite comfortable these days if it's Economy Plus (3" more legroom, don't think there's any other difference).

You get a pretty big screen (8-9"?) and there's usually like 200 movies to choose from, food is decent if you avoid American carriers.
