I have the unhooded version of this jacket for a few years now and has been a staple on all my travels - packs very small, very light and with the 800 down feels as warm as some of my thicker/heavier jackets -- just have to be careful brushing up against large thorns or anything sharp & snaggy...bought this hooded version as I feel it was the only thing really missing from the one I already have...hoping I can layer these both together if going somewhere really cold...

This is a first ascent jacket, Eddie Bauer's hiking/mountaineering line. This thing is mostly made to be worn as a layering piece and has a lot of tech to reduce size and keep it lightweight. If you don't really need that tech or like the purple I would recommend going for the stratustherm that was also posted on SD today. Great price for this if you need the tech, otherwise that stratustherm has more colors and is totally suitable for most activities.

EARLYFEB60 worked for me and gave me free shipping. I didn't buy the posted jacket, but a sweater dress and some flip flops. Came to $38. February60 did not have free shipping for me.

Wouldn't it be too hot for hiking? You'll sweat like crazy in a down jacket. I sweat eo much in just a t shirt and pants and I see people wearing down jackets and aren't breathable.

I prefer modern synthetic insulation, like Primaloft Gold. Down jackets require gentle care and are afraid of water, which sometimes might be annoying. Nevertheless, I like Eddie Bauer's stuff a lot, and have got a few jackets of the First Ascent line (Emperor parka and Grid Fleece jacket).

Sounds like it would be too hot for you when hiking, but if you were in a cold environment, you might want to put it on after you stopped hiking or were in an outdoor campsite. A lot of people who are traveling are spending a lot of time just standing around....
