Should add "digital" to the title. I came here thinking it was for physical discs

I agree with the other commenters. I consider digital "purchases" to be extended rentals. This movie is too important to me to not have a physical copy.

Make sure that you download these to a computer for future use as the seller may decide to NOT make them available at their convenience sometime in the future.

How does the quality of the digital editions compare with the phycical 4k Blu-ray Discs? I own the discs which are amazing -- except when my player chokes or skips.

It depends on your set up. If you have the set up to take full advantage of the physical discs, it's a fairly noticeable difference. I only get digital for things i don't care much for. And only if they're deeply discounted. That way, i can justify it in my head as a rental (digital purchases aren't permanent)

Looks like on the Fanflix deal, only the Hobbit movies are available in both Theatrical and Extended editions. For LOTR, it's only the Return of the King in Theatrical... Good job the MS deal is Movies Anywhere.

It depends on the quality of your equipment.
The AQ is where digital drops off in quality significantly.

Getting a good player will help with those issues BTW.

Given all the variations of the physical editions of the extended editions, which version is recommended as the one to get if going physical?

You should wait for the 64K version in 5 years. I have the double DVD extended version. I am good for a long time.

My plan is to get a set top box that can blay 4k Blu-Ray .iso files and have everything on hard drive / ssd. https://www.dune-hd.com/ These guys have a lot of good options.

Best thing is to wait, if you want the best quality) til Target or someone offers BOGO free and pick them both up, they come with digital editions, you can either keep or sale them on ebay. Bit rate is higher on Discs than streaming, this affects the quality of the video\audio.
