There is a good chance that you will be booted at the gate.
I look for nothing less now--piano hinge, rubber gasket, and clamps or I don't even bother looking further.
I believe you are referring to American Tourister.
In one of the pictures for the teal color it says 100% aluminum. I didn't go through all the colors.
What I don't understand is hardcase carry on. Like you said, it's not meant to be thrown around, so why not go with a soft case, that can be easier to fit into overhead bins?

Not sure why the TD, I fly all kinds of southwest and never seen them force someone to check unless they're literally the last couple people on the plane and all bins are full, seen it maybe twice on literally hundreds of segments.
United OTOH, if you're in group 5, even if the bins are half empty they'll force you to check before you get in the jetway. Keep flying southwest and u won't have to worry, like your post implies.
