We have the XL version of this that we love to use when we travel. We will roll it up and stick it into the luggage that we are checking in. This way we only have to drag one bag around.

On the return flight, we load up all our dirty clothes into this bag and check it in. This ends up leaving us an entire suitcase for snacks and souvenirs! We recently did this on our trip to Tokyo.

This bag is tough and clothing is soft so there is never any damage other than some scuffs (we have done this one 8+ international trips) the past 10 years and the bad is still holding up just fine. Being able to wear it like a backpack makes heavier loads much easier too.

Many may not like the bright colors, but makes it very easy to spot when waiting for it to come up from the luggage carousel.
Garbage low quality? These bags are designed for expeditions to Everest hence the name Base Camp. You're mistaken.

Can the backpack straps be stowed away for checking? Hard to tell from pictures. Tks

Description says they're detachable, if not stowable

Great idea packing it empty, then loading it up with clothes on the way home. Seeing that you checked this in on multiple international flights, you didn't seem to have any issues with the bag's size which is well over the 62" L+W+H limit for a checked bag. I've had international flights where they were real sticklers on bag size even for checked luggage and I was charged for oversized luggage. Do you think because it was soft, no one bothered questioning it?

I love these bags. I have a M and L. Have had them for 10-15 years. It's my go to travel bag, unless I'm bringing dress clothes, and even then I sometimes use it. I've traveled all around the world with these bags. They're incredibly durable. I wouldn't bat an eyelash to repurchase them but they're still in such great shape that I don't need to. Sure there may be some new features/designs but you can't go wrong with this bag.

I have the older version....the straps are not removable, but you can pull them tight and it's not an issue (I also tie the leftover straps together so they don't snag anywhere). My bags have 100k miles of flights without an issue (with lots of different airlines/countries). These things are tough...I'd definitely buy more if I needed them but the originals are still going strong even though they've traveled a lot by air and ground through rough terrain.

Do the REI coupons we get in the mail typically apply to sale items?

20% off one full price item; 20% off one REI coop item. I do not think this deal would qualifying for either to double dip when those coupons go live May 17.

I have 2 of these and they are built like a tank. The material is so thick I don't think you could even puncture it with a sharp knife. Comes with a little bag so you can stow it away when not in use. Only downside is it came with no shoulder strap.

Depends on how much you plan on packing. I have a medium and large. The large is really big and I only use that for long getaways. Medium is def the way to go if for daily use or even the small.

I would advise on getting the bigger sizes. I have the small one that I used as carry on because there are strict weight restrictions on some discount SE Asian airlines. However, they are rather uncomfortable on your back if you have to wear it for a while so I'll never use it in that fashion again. It's made of strong material but this also means there's practically no give even though it's supposed to be a soft bag.

Basically just need something for weekend trips to a couple friends houses who are at the shore, the lake, etc (figure Frid night, Sat, Sun, returning Sun evening)
