I maintain 50 small compressors at Stanford University and have used these and several other autodrains. You are probably not going to like hearing the compressor drain every 45 minutes. A once a day timer would be a bit more reasonable. If you leave this device and your compressor plugged in, it will waste power and un-necessarily run your compressor every 45 minutes or less. Not good if you want to leave your compressor plugged in. I suggest leaving it unplugged when you are not using the compressor or plug it into a 7 day timer. Another down-side to auto drains is they can get stuck open and then the compressor runs constantly. I have had pumps and motors burn up because they ran continuously for several days, until someone checked it. It appears this one uses a ball valve, which is less likely to get stuck open.

I don't. Looking on the web I think this Walmart link is similar but I've never used the HF model nor this one so I can't say if they are worth anything.

I've used the HF model, which looks identical to your Walmart link.

It's a passive shuttle valve which is controlled by pressure in the line between the pump and the tank. If your compressor has an unloader (hisses for a bit when the motor stops), this is where you'd tap in.

These drains work, but get gummed up quickly and need cleaning. They can be a real hassle if you've mounted 'em according to the instructions.

I've had better luck with the electronic drains, and found them easier to service, though I also mounted them with that in mind (not under the tank).

Ideally you don't want to get to the point where a float would be needed. There are some auto drains that cycle when the compressor turns off. Harbor Freight sells one for cheap (not sure about the quality). Some higher end compressors like Champion also include cycle operated valves.
A float inside a tube mounted below the main tank seems like it would work fine. No water sitting in the tank itself.
