Currently, on Google Flights NYC-HND nonstop roundtrip on ANA metal is minimum $1500 no matter what day you pick. 5% off that is hardly a deal.

After flying both, i personally like JAL more than ANA, doesnt mean ANA is bad, it is way better than any US airlines. I was on a Eevee plane so it was pretty cool
When was this and where did you fly from? Would love to see the Eevee plane in person.

Oh wow Hokkaido! I'm going JFK to HND. Won't have time to visit Hokkaido unfortunately. What was your holiday itinerary when you went?

considering the cheapest nonstop option on this route is United ($1486) the 5% makes it about same as United for a superior product.

if I could fly LAX to HND for United prices on ANA aircraft I will do it 100% of the time.
That's the thing—LAX consistently has the best fares to Japan, you can find $700-800 nonstop on full service airlines and it gets even lower when on sale. SFO is about the same distance to Japan, but (before Zipair existed, and excluding Zipair today) their nonstop fares have always been much closer to those of NYC, for some reasons I still don't understand. You have a lot of good options at LAX, so you wouldn't mind paying a bit more for a better airline.

Now if you ask me whether I'd fly JFK/EWR to HND for United prices on ANA metal, the answer is no I wouldn't fly at all at United prices, because $1.4k for economy is robbery. I straight up don't consider it a deal.

That doesn't mean I don't fly to Japan. I have visited there 4 times in the past year, on my own dime, for leisure. I take advantage of location, different flight deals, and awards to score all of my flights.
  • Flew LGA-DEN-SFO to visit parents for a few days, then caught a Zipair flight SJC-NRT. This was around Christmas and booked last minute, which I rarely ever do, so the fares were insane: $300 + $800 if I include the checked bags. Never again. Return flight cost 35k miles on United metal NRT-EWR.
  • Roundtrip JFK-HND on ANA metal, economy class, 38.5k United miles each way. Booked almost a year ahead when there was some availability even though this was the middle of cherry blossom season. Was upgraded to premium economy for free on return flight because economy was overbooked.
  • ANA business class JFK-HND for 47.5k Virgin Atlantic miles one way. This was during an off season so ANA started releasing unsold business class seats in the last few days ahead of the flight. Return flight was another United economy.
  • Cathay Pacific had a deal JFK-HKG for zero fare but pay $250 in taxes and fees. Flew budget airlines like HK Express and Peach Aviation to get to/from Japan. Scheduled flights such that I could spend an entire early morning in Cathay's The Pier first class lounge (got in through OW emerald status) in HKG, one of the best lounges in the world.
  • Grabbed one more ANA economy JFK-HND one way for 38.5k United miles before United suddenly devalued their miles unannounced >Frown considering I was saving $700 with 38.5k miles it was a pretty good deal, probably the best deal for economy in United's whole system. Now the lowest price for that route is 55k-60.4k miles and I can consider United miles pretty much worthless. Return is JAL business class HND-JFK nonstop for 60k AA miles; I got lucky there scoring it months ahead, probably because of a cancellation.

I flew ANA last year and the food was good. They gave Haagan Dazs ice cream as a dessert. Also their lemonade was fantastic. I kept trying to find it around Tokyo on my 18 hour layover.

Road trip from Sapporo to Hakodate, the spot that we went to were much easier to drive to then taking public transportation. If you just stick in Sapporo, then you do not need a car.

People from Hokkaido general do not speak English but google translate works perfect

I think you missed my point... for the same price from a single city to Tokyo nonstop, I would fly ANA over United.

I don't compare NYC prices to LAX, as it cuts both ways (cheap to Japan out of LAX, cheap to Europe out of JFK).

I think you missed mine - I just wanted to make you read my crazy skills at avoiding the prices that you're willing to pay. Saying ANA > United is not adding anything to the conversation - everybody already knows that.

I read your crazy skills, but the whole point of my original "ANA > United" comment was meant to address why a percentage based discount is relevant and on Slickdeals to begin with.

you could have just said "I go out of my way to avoid paying NYC prices" and that would have been enough. I go out of my way to NOT fly out of LAX because it is one of the worst airports to get in/out of (and I've been doing it for 25 years).

but I'm sure you (and everyone else) already know that... so what's the point of this whole discussion thread? or maybe there are people that haven't flown both UAL and NH?

maybe those people would benefit from some insight.
