Please note the PC in the OP doesn't have a Thunderbolt port, and as such can't be used with an eGPU.

I usually have hit or miss luck with Minisforum products but the NAD9 is actually excellent for me. I have two in a home lab hosting Proxmox virtual machines. They are nearly silent both under load and not under load (though beware it is because the thermal limits are set a little low in the BIOS, around 50W continuous. It can be adjusted as well as the fan curve if you want more noise and higher sustained performance).

I've not had any sudden shutdowns or other problems that commonly plague Minisforum machines.

Any security concerns with this Chinese company? I bought another one of the computers and downloaded and installed my own OS from Microsoft to be safe, but their BIOS could still potentially be an attack vector.

and feedback and comments on the HX80G?
i am actually thinking about getting one to replay my dGPU mobile workstation, because any work i do on the laptop would send the fan to run at a annoy rate. i was hoping things like HX80G could be a pretty good idea if the cooling and noise is under control
i think it's great. i got mine ~july '23 for ~$750.

im not heavy gamer, mostly cs/dota2. i game with just speakers. in terms of noise, i dont notice it while gaming. it's not an obnxious fan noise so i kinda drown it out i guess, the pc is ~2 ft from my ears. my temps are usually ~70, i dont think ive seen it over 75. but then i dont push it to its limits. im using 34 inch 1440p monitor btw.. i think i can basically have a 'silent' setup if i move the pc to under desk or further away...

i dont think they sell the hx80g anymore. the 99g or 100g is ~800-900. great price imo, especially sff

thanks, but why are you thinking about replacing it with a mini-pc+egpu setup? just want to know if there is any limitations that made you want to move away that quickly

honestly, i dont even need to upgrade.. just an itch lol
before i got the hx80g, i had bought a razor core egpu enclosure(2nd hand ~$100)... thinking of doing laptop+egpu. but laptop fans are crazy loud.. then i saw the hx80g for ~750, so im like f it, just go with that..

if i could, id just sell the razor core; oculink is the future

Anyone use a mini PC like this with hard drives for something like unRAID?

edit: say a few 3.5" drives, and an NVME or two

I was wondering the same but for some of those dell refurb xeon towers. They have a 44% off sale right now and i think one with pretty decent specs (and a non integrated GPU) priced out to ~375. Obviously the power consumption would be higher, but im curious about everyones thoughts.
I really like the Intel N100's, they sip power and are pretty speedy. I wouldn't use one for desktop, but for running something like opnsense or blueiris, it's great. I have one with blueiris on 14 cameras and it's using AI for subject detection without any issue. CPU is around 28-50% constantly.

so if I connect HDDs in USB4 enclosure this can became a NAS server?
Yes it can, that's what I do. I use Windows storage pools and share it on my network. Got a 4 bay enclosure with 2 mirrored 18TB drives at the moment.

Works great and easy to use (I'm familiar with Windows and not all the fancy TrueNAS/Proxmox stuff, but there's no reason you couldn't install those).

I think the Mini PC + enclosure is far more capable and flexible than standard all-in-one NAS.

Fascinating - had never heard of such a thing and after the Google told me what it is, I realize a dell laptop I threw in a drawer recently can be used, once again. 👌

Does anyone actually own one of these yet? Would this work as an always on PC? I would be putting a 2.5 SSD and a m.2 SSD. The cooling looks great, but it's still small and has the i9, so concerned about overheating. I know it would need more regular dust-blowouts.

I need an upgrade for my Plex server that doubles as my home PC, so I want a Windows license. $620 with Windows, 32 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD seems reasonable. Any reason to avoid this version?
