NASA [nasa.gov] links to the American Astronomical Society [aas.org] for a list of North American solar film manufacturers that were approved to ISO 12312-2 and also for approved vendors of those solar filters.

"These include companies and organizations with which members of the AAS Solar Eclipse Task Force have had good experience as well as other companies and organizations that have demonstrated to our satisfaction that the products they're selling meet the safety requirements of the ISO 12312-2 international standard."

[Note: NASA and AAS both do not directly approve or certify any solar filter themselves. And as such there is no official NASA or AAS preferred solar filter. ISO certification from an American company is gonna be as good as you can get here.]

Daystar Filters, the filters sold on this B&H deal, are on the list of North American Manufacturers on the AAS website. And B&H is on the list of Authorized Dealers of Products Made in North America or Germany. 👍👍

Eye doc here, do me a favor and just don't stare at the sun.
During the last eclipse rush, the market was loaded with gray-market/fake-certified glasses. The American Astronomical Society publishes a list of certified vendors and vetted retailers for eclipse glasses.

So the question for you is - is it worth risking your permanent vision quality to save $5 from some random Amazon 3rd-party seller? Personally, I'd stick with B&H.
Correcting, there's a misconception that eclipses are particularly harmful, as if the light is worse than regular sunlight. That's not the case, the issue is that people are more apt to look/stare.

Welding glass/helmet/goggles works as well.

PSA: one of the best ways to tell if glasses are counterfeit or not is if they have the manufacturers address listed on the glasses themselves. Most of the Chinese manufacturers with dubious home made compliance certificates do not follow the standard requirement with respect to the manufacturing address.

also, don't buy glasses that say they are NASA approved. NASA does no such thing!

Okay, but does anyone actually care about the eclipse because I sure don't. All I hear about is people telling me that everyone cares, but I haven't had a single person come up to me and tell me how excited they are about the eclipse. This honestly just seems like some sort of big oil marketing ploy to sell more gas vehicles if you ask me.

I am not excited about the eclipse, but many of my friends who are engineers and scientists or just science minded are excited. Many of them are traveling to Ohio or Texas.

I think the message here is you need new friends LOL

But in all seriousness the eclipse glasses industry will sell 50m ish units. That's not insignificant.

Sooo... Ignore the actual, medically trained professional eye doctor, strap on a welding helmet and FTW... Got it! 😁

Ive never seen a welders mask that was clear enough to see anything far away, let alone clean enough lol. I'd rather just watch it through a camera lens and screen or something along those lines. It's only a once in a lifetime event but I wouldn't bother relying on something so obscure.
Be aware that the direct solar exposure will destroy your phone or camera sensor also. They do make reasonably-priced solar filters for them though. Celestron makes slip-on SLR filters for ~$20, and the adhesive ones for smartphones go for ~$10. Enjoy!

Try finding a flight to or from any airport in driving distance of totality +/- 2 days from the eclipse. Flights to Dallas and Austin we're scarce a month ago. Now they're all but impossible to find. Ditto for rental cars - I've never seen fully sold-out airport car rentals until booking one recently. Most people may not be willing to make the effort, but plenty are.

On a phone perhaps, but it will be a poor solution. I didn't have a great experience trying that last time around. B&H has pretty cheap solutions designed for cameras.

Thanks for this. I checked the AAS website, and Daystar is on their list as approved manufacturers. And B&H Photo is listed as an authorized reseller. So these all seem pretty safe. Again, thanks for the tip!

I don't think anyone thinks the rays themselves are more harmful. And it isn't just that you can tolerate looking at it longer it is also the fact your pupils dilate due to visible light being less. So your natural protective mechanism of constricting your pupils is defeated letting in other harmful wavelengths of light.

You have clearly never asked this question to an average American.

All, stay away from anything that says "NASA Approved"- NASA can't and does NOT approve jack squat!! This claim is all over the place. It's inconceivable how this is legal, how they can get away with this... Reminds me of the mask claims during Covid.
